Notre Pain Quotidien - De station en station


Lisez : Nombres 33.1‑15,36,37 | La Bible en un an : Jérémie 12 – 14 et 2 Timothée 1

Moïse écrivit leurs marches de station en station, d’après l’ordre de l’Éternel. (Nombres 33.2)

Le chapitre 33 du livre des Nombres compte parmi ceux de la Bible que nous risquons de lire sans même y réfléchir. Il semble se résumer à une longue liste d’endroits retraçant le pèlerinage des Israélites de Ramsès en Égypte jusqu’à leur arrivée dans les plaines de Moab. Ce chapitre doit néanmoins avoir son importance puisqu’il s’agit du seul passage de ce livre biblique qui suit les mots : « [D’après] l’ordre de l’Éternel » (V. 2).

Pourquoi archiver ces données ? Se pourrait‑il que cette liste procure un cadre qui permettait aux Israélites sortant du désert de retracer en mémoire leur périple de quarante ans en se remémorant la fidélité dont Dieu a fait preuve en chaque lieu ?

J’imagine un père israélite assis près d’un feu de camp évoquant le passé avec son fils : « Je n’oublierai jamais Rephidim ! Je mourais de soif, il n’y avait que du sable et de la sauge à des kilomètres à la ronde. Puis Dieu a demandé à Moïse de frapper un rocher de son bâton, une vraie dalle de silex. Et je me suis dit : Quel geste inutile ; il ne tirera jamais rien de cette pierre ! Mais à mon grand étonnement, de l’eau en a jailli ! Un flot d’une générosité telle qu’il a permis de désaltérer des milliers d’Israélites. Je n’oublierai jamais ce jour‑là ! » (Voir PS 114.8 ; NO 20.8‑13 ; 33.14.)

Pourquoi donc ne pas tenter le coup ? Réfléchissez à votre vie – de station en station – et remémorez‑vous toutes les façons dont Dieu vous a démontré sa fidélité et son amour par alliance.

Night Light for Couples - Admit You’re Wrong

It is very difficult for parents to ask their children for forgiveness. They feel that it somehow damages their authority to admit they have done wrong and promise to do better next time. But I (jcd) believe it is healthy for a mom and dad to model for a child how to apologize when they have done something wrong.

One evening years ago, I was especially grouchy with my ten‐year‐old daughter, Danae. I blamed her for things that weren’t her fault and upset her needlessly. After I went to bed, I realized that I needed to apologize. The next morning I said, “Danae, I’m sure you know that daddies are not perfect human beings. I know I wasn’t fair with you last night. I was terribly grouchy, and I’m asking you to forgive me.” Danae put her arms around me, then shocked me to my toes when she said, “I knew you were going to have to apologize, Daddy, and it’s okay. I forgive you!”

If parents never admit their wrongs, their children often remember the offenses well into adulthood. Instead of clearing the air and reestablishing the relationship, the hurt feelings are stored in the memory bank to fester. Furthermore, by admitting a wrong, the parent says on the record that things will change—that he or she will try not to make the same mistake in the future. Healthy families follow these principles of forgiveness… from the top down!

Heavenly Father, it’s never easy to admit we’re wrong—especially to children. Give us the courage to seek forgiveness from our kids whenever it’s warranted. May our family grow up without lingering bitterness and hurt. Amen.

Slander has shaken many, and scattered them from nation to nation; it has destroyed strong cities, and overturned the houses of the great. Slander has driven virtuous women from their homes, and deprived them of the fruit of their toil. Those who pay heed to slander will not find rest, nor will they settle down in peace. The blow of a whip raises a welt, but a blow of the tongue crushes the bones. Many have fallen by the edge of the sword, but not as many as have fallen because of the tongue. Happy is the one who is protected from it, who has not been exposed to its anger, who has not borne its yoke, and has not been bound with its fetters. For its yoke is a yoke of iron, and its fetters are fetters of bronze; its death is an evil death, and Hades is preferable to it. It has no power over the godly; they will not be burned in its flame. Ecclesiasticus 28:16 (NRSV) Those who pay heed to slander will not find rest, nor will they settle down in peace.

Unfortunately, many people find slanderous reports entertaining and fulfilling—titillating, even. Juicy gossip seems to satisfy a deep hunger in us—either to believe that we are better than others or to relish the embarrassing dramas of famous or infamous people. With the advent of social media, this kind of hard-heartedness has taken on a frightening uptick, revealing a vicious delight in celebrating shame, guilt, or “otherness.”

As we seek affirmation for our self-worth, we sometimes look for support in damaging places. The more we hear negative gossip about others, the better we may feel about ourselves: “I may not be perfect, but I am better than that person.”

As Christians, our self-worth is rooted in being unique and beloved children of God. We have infinite value because God sent Jesus to be our savior, and by his life and love, we have been adopted as God’s children.

Standing Strong Through the Storm - SACRIFICIAL GIVING


In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples. Luke 14:33

Johnny Li, a former colleague and current missionary trainer in China shares about his meeting with two young pastors there:

As I entered the house, I surprised to observe the humble existence of these two mighty men of God. They were the leaders of house churches in their provinces, which had grown the past nine years to more than 200,000 Christians. They were both in their late twenties and even though they have been in the ministry since they were nineteen their enthusiasm reflected beautifully.

Everybody knew about the work of the Lord through these faithful servants. I also knew that they both spent several years in prison in extremely harsh conditions, but nothing prepared me for this humble home and modest lifestyle.

There were no furniture items, no ornaments, and no beds in the small house. Their clothes were hanging on the wall due to a lack of cupboards. The only furniture was a table and a chair to sit on. There was a blanket on the ground that was obviously used as the bed. Together we sat down and I started questioning them about their activities and work that was bearing much fruit.

“How often do you travel to neighbouring villages?” I asked. “As often as possible,” they replied.

“Where do you obtain your finances to do so?” “We sell what we have,” they replied and supplied me with an explanation to the question about the empty house which I dared not ask. “We sold the chairs and we sold the cupboard,” they continued. “And that supplied much-needed funds for our outreach.”

“What happens when you have nothing more to sell?” One pastor looked sadly down to the ground and answered softly, “We find something else to sell.”

“But what?” I kept on pressuring them. “You have already sold everything and have nothing left to sell. How will you raise money now?” Then came the startling answer. “We sell our blood on the black market. We get about five dollars but the need is so great that we have to do something to tell the people around us about Jesus.”

“How can you do this” I asked. “How can you justify selling your blood to send out missionaries?” Without hesitation they answered, “We have no choice! The need is so great!”

RESPONSE: Today I will not complain about what I lack but think of what I can sacrifice for Jesus.

PRAYER: Lord, I reaffirm today my decision to follow You. I give You everything I am and have.

Girlfriends in God - Learning to Give Joy Away (Part 2)

Today's Truth

I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want (Philippians 4:12, NIV).

Friend to Friend

I once heard a story that offers a great prescription for joy. A young believer came to a man who had followed Christ for many years with the complaint that he had lost his joy. The older and wiser Christian responded, “Go do something for someone else. Repeat that act of kindness nine times. Then you will find joy.”

When we develop the habit of looking for a need and then meeting that need, we will experience joy as never before. Many times, instead of looking for a need, we look the other way.

One of the most amazing paradoxes in the Christian life is that the more we give, the more we receive. We simply cannot out-give God!

In Luke 6:38 we find an amazing promise, "If you give, you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full measure, pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, and running over. Whatever measure you use in giving - large or small - it will be used to measure what is given back to you."

If you want joy, learn to invest your life in others. Be on the lookout for a need and meet it. God created us to share each other's load. A shared load is a lighter load.

F.B. Meyer once noted: "I used to think God’s gifts were on shelves - one above another so that the taller we grow, the easier we can reach them. Now I find that God’s gifts are on shelves, one beneath another, and the lower we stoop, the more we get."

The apostle Paul says it this way in 2 Corinthians 9:10, "For God is the one who gives seed to the farmer and then bread to eat. In the same way, He will give you many opportunities to do good, and He will produce a great harvest of generosity in you."
  • Give your time.
  • Give encouragement.
  • Give a praying heart.
  • Give a listening ear.
  • Give yourself.
  • Give materially.
The more you give, the more joy you will experience. The more joy you have, the more you will want to give. God always rewards "joy-givers."

Philippians 4:17-18 "Really, it is not that I want to receive gifts from you. But I want you to have the good that comes from giving. Your gift is like a sweet-smelling sacrifice offered to God. God accepts that sacrifice, and it pleases Him."

The idea of a sweet-smelling sacrifice is taken from the sweet-smelling incense that was burned along with the Jewish sacrifices. When we meet a need in the life of someone, it is a pleasing aroma to God and a sacrifice of praise to Him. In fact, when we meet someone's need, we are actually giving through that need to God Himself. In other words, that met need becomes a deposit slip in our kingdom account. The perspective and heart behind the giving really matters. Joy-givers please God.

Three men were hired to work on a large building project. One was asked, "What are you doing?" He responded, "I'm mixing mortar. The second man said, "I'm helping put up this great stone wall." When the third man was asked what he was doing, he replied, "I'm building a cathedral to the glory of God." Perspective is a powerful thing.

In Philippians 4:19, Paul goes on to say that when we meet the needs of others, God will meet our needs. "My God will use His wonderful riches in Christ Jesus to give you everything you need."

When we give out of our limited resources, God gives out of His unlimited resources. What a solid foundation for a life of joy!

God stands today, arms open wide, ready to pour out His unspeakable gift of joy into our lives so we can have joy … and so we can share that joy with others. Our gift back to Him is to be a joy-giver.

Let's Pray

Father, please forgive me when I am so focused on what I can get that I ignore what I can give. Help me see others as You see them, to love others as You love them, and to give like You give. May I be a vessel through which Your joy flows into the people around me.
In Jesus' Name,
Amen.

Un Dia a la Vez - Jesús y el adulterio


Oísteis que fue dicho: No cometerás adulterio. Pero yo os digo que cualquiera que mira a una mujer para codiciarla, ya adulteró con ella en su corazón. Mateo 5:27-28, RV-60

Dios es bien radical con el problema del «adulterio». Desea y ordena que seamos hombres y mujeres de una sola pareja. No acepta bajo ninguna razón tener otras relaciones aparte del cónyuge. Sabemos que este es un veneno que mata los matrimonios y que cada vez más se filtra en las iglesias.

Por lo tanto, nosotros tenemos el llamado a cuidar los hogares, a huir de la tentación, pasar tiempo de calidad con nuestra pareja y tener muchísima comunicación. La clave de todo esto es tener a Jesús en el hogar como base. Además, la oración individual y en pareja es una bendición y es la manera de cubrir nuestro hogar.

Recuerda que no vale la pena que por un momento de placer o por una aventura se arroje por la ventana el matrimonio y los hijos. Sobre todo, que tengamos que vivir las consecuencias por nuestros actos donde el juez supremo es Dios.

Aunque tanto el hombre como la mujer tienen la responsabilidad del matrimonio, Dios le va a pedir cuentas al hombre que es la cabeza del hogar. Si tiene la autoridad, tiene mayor responsabilidad ante Él.

Busca a tu pareja, reconcíliate con ella y arregla tus cuentas con Dios.

Our Daily Bread - Mending Hearts

You are the light of the world. Matthew 5:14

Not long ago I went to a seamstress to have some clothing altered. As I entered her shop I was encouraged by what I saw on the walls. One sign read, “We can mend your clothes but only God can mend your heart.” Near it was a painting of Mary Magdalene weeping in anguish as the risen Christ was about to reveal Himself to her. Another sign asked, “Need prayer? Let us pray with you.”

The owner told me that she had run this small business for fifteen years. “We’ve been surprised how the Lord has worked here through the statements of faith we have posted in different places. A while back someone trusted Christ as their Savior right here. It is amazing to watch God work.” I told her I too was a Christian and commended her for telling others about Christ in her workplace.

Not all of us are able to be so bold in our workplace, but we can find many creative and practical ways of showing others unexpected love, patience, and kindness wherever we are. Since leaving that shop, I’ve been thinking about how many ways there are to live out our Lord’s statement: “You are the light of the world” (Matt. 5:14).


Dear Father, use me to be a light today to the world around me. I love You and want others to know and love You too.

Ihr seid das Licht der Welt. (Matthäus 5,14)

Vor kurzem ging ich zu einer Schneiderin, um ein paar Kleider ändern zu lassen, und staunte über das, was ich an den Wänden des Ladens sah. Auf einem Schild hieß es: „Wir können Ihre Kleider ändern, aber nur Gott ändert Ihr Herz.“ Daneben hing ein Bild mit einer weinenden Maria Magdalena, kurz bevor der auferstandene Herr sich ihr offenbarte. Auf einem anderen Aushang stand: „Brauchen Sie Hilfe? Wir beten für Sie.“

Die Besitzerin erzählte, dass sie den kleinen Laden schon seit fünfzehn Jahren betrieb. „Wir können nur staunen, wie der Herr durch die Sprüche, die wir überall aufgehängt haben, schon gewirkt hat. Vor kurzem hat jemand hier im Laden Jesus als seinen Erlöser angenommen. Es ist wunderbar, Gott an der Arbeit zu sehen.“ Ich erzählte ihr, dass ich auch Christ sei, und sagte, ich fände es toll, dass sie an ihrem Arbeitsplatz anderen von Jesus erzählt.

Nicht jeder hat die Möglichkeit, an seiner Arbeitsstelle so offen seinen Glauben zu bezeugen. Aber wir können andere kreative und praktische Methoden finden, um Liebe, Geduld und Freundlichkeit zu zeigen, wo man es nicht erwartet. Seit ich in dem Laden war, denke ich darüber nach, auf wie viele Weisen wir die Aussage Jesus: „Ihr seid das Licht der Welt“ (Matth. 5,14) ausleben können.

Gott lässt seine Liebe in unsere Herzen strömen, damit sie zu anderen weiterfließen kann.

Не так давно я решил обновить гардероб и отправился в швейное ателье. Войдя туда, я сразу обратил внимание на плакаты и надписи, развешанные на стенах. Один из них гласил: «Мы можем перешить одежду, но только Бог может исправить сердце». Рядом было изображение плачущей Марии Магдалины и готового обратиться к ней воскресшего Христа. Еще одна надпись гласила: «Нужна молитва? Помолимся вместе».

Хозяйка сообщила, что их заведению уже исполнилось пятнадцать лет. «Удивительно, как Господь трудится через эти надписи. Как-то один человек уверовал во Христа прямо здесь. Потрясающе видеть, как действует Бог», – поделилась она. Я сказал, что тоже верующий, и похвалил ее усердие в свидетельстве на рабочем месте.

Не все могут быть такими дерзновенными на работе, зато можно найти много творческих и практичных способов проявить любовь, терпение и доброту, где бы мы ни находились. Уходя из ателье, я думал о том, как много у нас возможностей воплотить в жизнь слова Господа: «Вы – свет мира» (Мф. 5:14).

Бог изливает Свою любовь в наши сердца, чтобы она пролилась на других.
