“Do Not Despise the Day of Small Things”

For whoever has despised the day of small things shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel. (Zechariah 4:10)

Introduction

In Zechariah 4:10, the Lord speaks through the prophet to encourage the leader, Zerubbabel, as he rebuilds the temple in Jerusalem. The verse reads, “For whoever has despised the day of small things shall rejoice, and shall see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel.” This verse reminds us that in God’s work, even the smallest beginnings or efforts are significant.

Reflection

When God's people returned from exile, the task of rebuilding the temple seemed monumental, and the resources and support appeared meager. In the eyes of some, the small, struggling community in Jerusalem was unlikely to achieve anything notable. Yet, God reassured them that these humble beginnings were part of His divine plan.

Consider the story of a small rural church, which once faced dwindling numbers and low community engagement. It seemed destined to close doors until a new pastor arrived. Rather than focusing on grandiose plans, she started small—visiting homes, starting a food pantry, and organizing community clean-ups. These small acts, though seemingly insignificant, reignited hope and community spirit. Years later, that small church not only thrived but also became a vital community hub. This transformation shows how God's power often works in ways that might initially seem trivial or modest.

Application

It's easy to become disillusioned when our efforts don't yield immediate, large-scale results or when our daily routines feel inconsequential. However, Zechariah 4:10 calls us to see the divine significance in even the smallest acts of faithfulness. Whether it's offering a kind word to a stranger, volunteering a few hours at a local shelter, or dedicating time to prayer, God values these small deeds and uses them as foundations for greater works.

Conclusion

In a world that often celebrates only the biggest and the best, it’s important to remember that God’s kingdom often grows in quiet, unnoticeable ways. Like Zerubbabel, who laid the foundation of the temple with a simple plumb line, our small contributions are used by God to build something far greater than we can imagine.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us not to despise the day of small things. Help us to see Your hand at work in all areas of our lives, no matter how trivial they may seem. Grant us the faith to trust that You are building Your kingdom through our small acts of obedience. Strengthen us to continue working faithfully, knowing that You bring growth and fruition in Your perfect timing. Amen.
