The Rainbow’s Promise

I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. (Genesis 9:15a)

Introduction

In Genesis 9:15a, God says to Noah, “I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh.” This passage occurs after the flood, symbolizing God's mercy and the covenant with Noah that He would never again destroy all life with a flood. The rainbow stands as a sign of this everlasting covenant, a promise of redemption and renewal.

Reflection

On September 11, 2023, the skies over New York City witnessed a stunning natural spectacle—a double rainbow. This phenomenon appeared on the twenty-second anniversary of the terrorist attacks that shook the United States and the world. The appearance of the double rainbow on such a day of remembrance can be viewed as a divine reminder of God’s enduring presence and promises.

Consider the story of a firefighter who served during the rescue operations on September 11, 2001. Twenty-two years later, this firefighter, now retired, witnessed the double rainbow from a park in Brooklyn, overlooking the city skyline. To him, the rainbow was not just a meteorological event; it was a message of hope and a sign that despite past tragedies, the promise of peace and renewal remains steadfast.

Application

Just as the rainbow reminded the retired firefighter of hope and renewal, we too can find solace in God’s promises in our lives. In times of tragedy or despair, God's word and His creation can provide us with tangible reminders of His faithfulness and love. The rainbow calls us to remember, not just the storms, but the promises that follow.

Conclusion

The double rainbow over New York City on the anniversary of September 11 serves as a powerful testament to God’s unchanging promise. Like the covenant with Noah, it reminds us that after every storm—whether it be personal, national, or global—there is the potential for renewal and hope. God’s promises are as real today as they were in Noah’s time, continuously reminding us of His presence and grace.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, on this day of remembrance, we thank You for the sign of the double rainbow, which reassures us of Your eternal covenant. Help us to hold onto Your promises, especially in times of sorrow and difficulty. Renew our spirits and remind us that You are always with us, guiding us towards peace and restoration. In Your loving name, we pray, Amen.
