Matthew 6:33

But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Introduction

Matthew 6:33 is a verse from the Sermon on the Mount, one of the most famous and foundational teachings of Jesus in the New Testament. This verse is part of a larger discourse that focuses on trust in God and the rejection of materialism.

Commentary

In this verse, Jesus encapsulates a central theme of the Sermon on the Mount—prioritizing spiritual pursuits over earthly concerns. The preceding verses discuss the futility of worrying about material needs like food and clothing. Jesus reassures his followers that by prioritizing the kingdom of God, all necessary things for life will be provided. This is a call to focus on divine righteousness and the eternal rather than being consumed by temporal needs and anxieties.

Understanding Context

This passage is especially poignant in the context of Jesus addressing a crowd likely fraught with daily struggles and uncertainties about basic necessities. The "kingdom of God" refers to God’s sovereign rule, which Jesus inaugurated during His ministry, characterized by a life aligned with God’s will. "His righteousness" refers to living a life that reflects God’s standards of justice and moral integrity. Jesus assures that those who live by these priorities experience God's provision and care in their lives.

Application for Today

In contemporary society, this verse challenges believers to reassess their priorities. It calls for a profound trust in God amidst a culture often dominated by material success and security. For Christians today, striving for the kingdom might mean engaging in acts of service, justice, and compassion while trusting that personal needs are not neglected when they commit to God's agenda. It's a reminder to live counter-culturally, not succumbing to societal pressures but seeking to reflect God’s justice and mercy in all aspects of life.

Reflection

  • How do you balance your pursuit of material needs with your spiritual commitments?

  • In what ways can you seek the kingdom of God in your everyday life?

  • Reflect on a moment when prioritizing God’s will led to unexpected provision or fulfillment in your life.
