Answering the Call with Courage

Do not rebel against the LORD; and do not fear the people of the land, for they are no more than bread for us; their protection is removed from them, and the LORD is with us; do not fear them. (Numbers 14:9)

Introduction

In Numbers 14:9, we encounter a pivotal moment as the Israelites stand on the brink of entering the Promised Land. The verse reads: "Only do not rebel against the LORD, and do not fear the people of the land, for they are no more than bread for us; their protection is removed from them, and the LORD is with us; do not fear them." This passage is a powerful reminder of the assurance and protection that faith in God provides, even in the face of daunting challenges.

Reflection

The story of the Israelites at the threshold of Canaan profoundly illustrates the struggle between faith and fear. The spies had returned from surveying the land, and while most reported insurmountable obstacles and formidable foes, Joshua and Caleb saw an opportunity for triumph through faith. Their perspective was not that the challenges were absent but that God’s presence made them surmountable.

This narrative resonates deeply with anyone who has stood at the precipice of a new calling or responsibility, especially within the church. Perhaps you’ve studied and prepared, knowing that someday God might call you to a higher responsibility. Yet, when that day comes, the weight of the task makes you hesitate. The challenges loom large, and feelings of inadequacy surge.

Consider a modern-day illustration: A young woman, after years of studying and serving in various capacities at her church, is offered the role of leading a major ministry. Initially, she wants to refuse. She knows the struggles of balancing this new role with her personal commitments, not to mention her feelings of not being wise enough, strong enough, or simply enough. But as she prays and seeks counsel, she finds encouragement in the words of Numbers 14:9. She realizes that her fear, while natural, is not from God. God has prepared her through her studies and service, just as He prepared Joshua and Caleb to step into this role with faith.

Application

When you feel inadequate for the tasks God has set before you, remember that He does not call the equipped; He equips the called. Reflect on the times God has been with you in past challenges. He remains with you now. Embrace the responsibilities He places before you as opportunities to witness His power working through your willingness.

Conclusion

Stepping into a higher calling in the church can feel daunting. Yet, each step taken in faith is supported by the unshakeable truth that God is with us. Joshua and Caleb’s minority report in Numbers 14 was not based on denial of reality but on a supreme confidence in God’s power. Like them, you are called to view your challenges as bread—nourishment for your faith, proving God’s faithfulness time and again.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your presence, which assures me when I face giants in my life. Help me not to rebel against Your call out of fear. Strengthen my heart to trust in Your protection and guidance. When I feel inadequate, remind me that You are with me, turning my challenges into opportunities for Your glory. May I move forward with the courage of Joshua and Caleb, proclaiming that with You, no obstacle is insurmountable. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
