Psalm 23:1 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
There’s very little glamour in being a sheep. I’d prefer to be some large, powerful animal, roaming around on its own: a tiger, maybe—or a bear. At least I’d like to be the head sheep, if there were such a thing.
I like to imagine that I am
a powerful and effective agent of change, an accomplished and distinct
individual in the crowd of humanity. I may, in fact, find that I am a
leader at times, and able to accomplish some memorable things, but I
cannot pretend that my accomplishments stand on their own. Other
people—my parents, friends, or the men and women throughout history who
have learned, studied, served, and loved—make my life possible.
In the end, I am one sheep in the flock of humanity. There is some comfort in that: a reminder that our toil is not all that matters. We are defined not simply by what we do in the world but also by our connections to others.
O heavenly Father, you have filled the world with beauty: Open our eyes to behold your gracious hand in all your works; that, rejoicing in your whole creation, we may learn to serve you with gladness; for the sake of him through whom all things were made, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
