A Feast of Gratitude and Grace

When you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed.
Luke 14:13–14 (NIV)

In 2016, a heartwarming incident occurred when Wanda Dench, intending to invite her grandson to Thanksgiving dinner, accidentally sent the message to Jamal, a stranger, due to a recent change in her grandson's phone number. Jamal, having no plans, humorously clarified his identity and then asked if the invitation still stood. Wanda, displaying remarkable kindness, welcomed him with the words, “Of course you can.” This led to Jamal becoming a part of their Thanksgiving tradition annually, transforming a simple mistake into a cherished yearly event.

Reflection

On this Thanksgiving Day, as we gather to celebrate our blessings and express our gratitude, let us draw inspiration from the words of Jesus in Luke. He challenges us to redefine the guest list of our hearts and tables, urging us to include those who are often left on the fringes of society.

Thanksgiving, a time of abundant food and fellowship, presents a beautiful opportunity to practice the inclusive hospitality that Jesus speaks of. It's a day to not only be thankful for our blessings but also to become a blessing to others, particularly to those who may not have a family to dine with or a feast to enjoy.

Application

1. Extend an Invitation of Love: This Thanksgiving, consider inviting someone who might otherwise spend the day alone. It could be a neighbor, a coworker, or someone from your local community center.

2. Share Your Blessings: As you thank God for your blessings, think of ways you can share them. It could be as simple as preparing extra food to share with a homeless shelter or donating to a food bank.

3. Reflect on the True Spirit of Thanksgiving: Take a moment to discuss with your family and friends the true meaning of Thanksgiving. How does it align with Jesus' teachings in Luke 14:13–14?

4. Pray for a Heart of Inclusion: Ask God to give you a heart that eagerly welcomes and embraces those who are marginalized or alone, not just on Thanksgiving, but every day.

Prayer

Dear Lord, on this day of gratitude, we give You thanks for Your endless blessings. Help us to open our hearts and our homes in the spirit of true Thanksgiving. Guide us to recognize and meet the needs of those who are less fortunate. May our celebration today reflect Your love and grace, as we remember the teachings of Jesus to invite and include everyone to our table of thanksgiving. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Most of us here in the United States will be celebrating the national holiday of Thanksgiving today, November 28th, 2019. For many it's a day of feast to share with family and friends with a holiday turkey and an afternoon of watching sports on TV. For many it will be a day of loneliness for those who have no one to share this holiday with or a day to remember a loved one that they used to share this holiday with. For some it will be a day to give to our communities and help feed those who otherwise might go hungry this day. For many it's a day to remember and give thanks for our achievements this past year. For many it's the day to get a jump-start on their Christmas shopping. And for many it's a day to give Thanks to God for all He has done for us and the blessings that we have received from Him.

Today I share this Thanksgiving prayer with everyone. You may copy it and share it with your friends and family and may even use it as a prayer of grace for your Thanksgiving feast.

Dear Lord,

We come with hearts of gratitude today to bless Your name and to ask that Your hand of blessing would be upon us. THANK YOU, Father, for loving us with an eternal love that stands firm, even when we are unlovable. THANK YOU for being faithful, righteous, holy and just, yet willing to see us, Your children, through divine eyes of compassion, mercy, forgiveness and grace. THANK YOU for being a God of restoration and renewal in the midst of a broken, pain-filled world. THANK YOU for providing for our needs, directing our paths, and establishing our steps.

We acknowledge Your sovereignty, Lord, and freshly submit to Your will today. We ask Your BLESSING and GUIDANCE over our children, grandchildren, marriages, families, and loved ones. We ask Your BLESSING and GUIDANCE over our country, president, governors, senators, representatives, and local officials. We ask Your BLESSING and GUIDANCE over our communities, churches, schools, work places, decisions, and opportunities. Please FILL US with the presence of Your joy, peace, patience, goodness, gentleness, and self control today. HELP US to see as You see and to love as You love. Morning Prayer

Almighty and gracious Father, I give you thanks for the fruits of the earth in their season and for the labors of those who harvest them. Make me and all of my brothers and sisters in Christ, I pray, faithful stewards of your great bounty, for the provision of our necessities and the relief of all who are in need, to the glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. The Lessons

Deuteronomy 8:7-18

For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land with flowing streams, with springs and underground waters welling up in valleys and hills, a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey, a land where you may eat bread without scarcity, where you will lack nothing, a land whose stones are iron and from whose hills you may mine copper. You shall eat your fill and bless the LORD your God for the good land that he has given you. Take care that you do not forget the LORD your God, by failing to keep his commandments, his ordinances, and his statutes, which I am commanding you today. When you have eaten your fill and have built fine houses and live in them, and when your herds and flocks have multiplied, and your silver and gold is multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied, then do not exalt yourself, forgetting the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, who led you through the great and terrible wilderness, an arid wasteland with poisonous snakes and scorpions. He made water flow for you from flint rock, and fed you in the wilderness with manna that your ancestors did not know, to humble you and to test you, and in the end to do you good. Do not say to yourself, "My power and the might of my own hand have gotten me this wealth." But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, so that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your ancestors, as he is doing today.

2 Corinthians 9:6-15

The point is this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work. As it is written, "He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor; his righteousness endures forever." He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way for your great generosity, which will produce thanksgiving to God through us; for the rendering of this ministry not only supplies the needs of the saints but also overflows with many thanksgivings to God. Through the testing of this ministry you glorify God by your obedience to the confession of the gospel of Christ and by the generosity of your sharing with them and with all others, while they long for you and pray for you because of the surpassing grace of God that he has given you. Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!

Luke 17:11-19

On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was going through the region between Samaria and Galilee. As he entered a village, ten lepers approached him. Keeping their distance, they called out, saying, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!" When he saw them, he said to them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." And as they went, they were made clean. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice. He prostrated himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him. And he was a Samaritan. Then Jesus asked, "Were not ten made clean? But the other nine, where are they? Was none of them found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?" Then he said to him, "Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well."

The Apostle's Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

Mighty Father God, we thank You for this day — that it even exists, and especially, that we can live in it, that we can know it through the sense you gave us and breathe the air you have made. Your bounty and goodness to us is beyond understanding. We worship and praise you above all things, because you are above all things. Your hand has made them and your love has forgiven us and blessed us.

Keep us and those we love from danger, sickness, accident this day, we pray. Help us to turn our back on evil in all of its myriad forms, to turn aside from the temptation that besets us from within ourselves and from our reaction to the world outside. Broaden our minds and give us the gift of hearing truth even when we do not want to hear it, when a false thought is embedded in our minds and the truth disagrees with our preconceptions.

Fill us with gratitude. Give us the courage to change the things that are contrary to your Word, even when they are ingrained and it is painful for us to give them up. Let us realize our sins and give us the grace to repent it and seek your forgiveness. In the name of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior, Amen.

We furthermore thank you for those disappointments and failures that lead us to acknowledge our dependence upon your mercies alone.

Above all, we thank you for your Son Jesus Christ; for the truth of his Word and the example of his life; for his steadfast obedience, by which he overcame temptation; for his dying, through which he overcame death; and for his rising to life again, in which we are raised to the life of your kingdom.
