Old Testament
Numbers 13:31-14:25
13:31 Then the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against this people, for they are stronger than we.” 32 So they brought to the Israelites an unfavorable report of the land that they had spied out, saying, “The land that we have gone through as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants; and all the people that we saw in it are of great size. 33 There we saw the Nephilim (the Anakites come from the Nephilim); and to ourselves we seemed like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.”
The People Rebel
14:1 Then all the congregation raised a loud cry, and the people wept that night. 2 And all the Israelites complained against Moses and Aaron; the whole congregation said to them, “Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness! 3 Why is the Lord bringing us into this land to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will become booty; would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt?” 4 So they said to one another, “Let us choose a captain, and go back to Egypt.” 5 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the Israelites. 6 And Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes 7 and said to all the congregation of the Israelites, “The land that we went through as spies is an exceedingly good land. 8 If the Lord is pleased with us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land that flows with milk and honey. 9 Only, do not rebel against the Lord; and do not fear the people of the land, for they are no more than bread for us; their protection is removed from them, and the Lord is with us; do not fear them.” 10 But the whole congregation threatened to stone them. Then the glory of the Lord appeared at the tent of meeting to all the Israelites. 11 And the Lord said to Moses, “How long will this people despise me? And how long will they refuse to believe in me, in spite of all the signs that I have done among them? 12 I will strike them with pestilence and disinherit them, and I will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.”
Moses Intercedes for the People
13 But Moses said to the Lord, “Then the Egyptians will hear of it, for in your might you brought up this people from among them, 14 and they will tell the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you, O Lord, are in the midst of this people; for you, O Lord, are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them and you go in front of them, in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night. 15 Now if you kill this people all at one time, then the nations who have heard about you will say, 16 ‘It is because the Lord was not able to bring this people into the land he swore to give them that he has slaughtered them in the wilderness.’ 17 And now, therefore, let the power of the Lord be great in the way that you promised when you spoke, saying, 18 ‘The Lord is slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the parents upon the children to the third and the fourth generation.’ 19 Forgive the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of your steadfast love, just as you have pardoned this people, from Egypt even until now.” 20 Then the Lord said, “I do forgive, just as you have asked; 21 nevertheless—as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord— 22 none of the people who have seen my glory and the signs that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have tested me these ten times and have not obeyed my voice, 23 shall see the land that I swore to give to their ancestors; none of those who despised me shall see it. 24 But my servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit and has followed me wholeheartedly, I will bring into the land into which he went, and his descendants shall possess it. 25 Now, since the Amalekites and the Canaanites live in the valleys, turn tomorrow and set out for the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.”

The Epistle
Romans 3:9-20
None Is Righteous
3:9 What then? Are we any better off? No, not at all; for we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under the power of sin, 10 as it is written: “There is no one who is righteous, not even one; 11 there is no one who has understanding, there is no one who seeks God. 12 All have turned aside, together they have become worthless; there is no one who shows kindness, there is not even one.” 13 “Their throats are opened graves; they use their tongues to deceive.” “The venom of vipers is under their lips.” 14 “Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.” 15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood; 16 ruin and misery are in their paths, 17 and the way of peace they have not known.” 18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.” 19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20 For “no human being will be justified in his sight” by deeds prescribed by the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin.

The Gospel
Matthew 19:1-12
Teaching about Divorce
19:1 When Jesus had finished saying these things, he left Galilee and went to the region of Judea beyond the Jordan. 2 Large crowds followed him, and he cured them there. 3 Some Pharisees came to him, and to test him they asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause?” 4 He answered, “Have you not read that the one who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ 5 and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? 6 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” 7 They said to him, “Why then did Moses command us to give a certificate of dismissal and to divorce her?” 8 He said to them, “It was because you were so hard-hearted that Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. 9 And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for unchastity, and marries another commits adultery.” 10 His disciples said to him, “If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry.” 11 But he said to them, “Not everyone can accept this teaching, but only those to whom it is given. 12 For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by others, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let anyone accept this who can.”

The Morning Prayer for SATURDAY, June 23, 2018

Heavenly Father, I thank you this morning for all that I have. Even if I have problems with my health, I am alive today. If I have money problems, I will eat today. I have clothes to wear, a roof to protect me, and air to breathe. Let me never take for granted these gifts of life, oh Lord, but always remember that they come from you; without you, no man could make the sun shine or the tree bear its fruit. I pray to live this day in joy and thankfulness for what I have, remembering always who made me and who keeps me. In the name of Christ I pray, Amen.

Morning Devotions with Chaplain Kenny - Wedlock Should Be a Padlock

Wedlock Should Be a Padlock

All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.
~ Matthew 5:37 (NIV)

There’s no doubt, particularly as life spans have increased, that there is less certainty about finding and keeping lifelong love with just one person. A 2014 survey of 18 to 34 year-olds commissioned by the USA Network drama Satisfaction found that 43 percent would support a beta marriage model—testing relationships for two years before deciding to commit or dissolve.

Also, 36 percent of respondents backed the real estate marriage model in which couples would commit to a set period of time, ranging from five to thirty years, and at the end have to renegotiate if they want to remain married.

If you think this has some validity, let me help you out: The beta and real estate tests are not going to work. They’re already setting the stage for failure.

A successful marriage is a total commitment. It means that either you go for it or you don’t go for it. If you’re not sure that you’re marrying the right person, then don’t get married. It was Benjamin Franklin who said, “Keep your eyes wide open before marriage and half shut afterwards.”

I think the problem is that we walk into marriage with our eyes half shut. Sometimes a person will think, “This person has a lot of flaws, but he (or she) will be my project. I’m going to fix him (or her).” News flash: If you can’t love someone as they are, if you think you’re going to change them, then you’ll be in for a real shock.

Figure this out ahead of time, because wedlock should be a padlock. If you aren’t married yet—even if you’re engaged—and things aren’t working out, then go ahead and break up. If you are not willing to make that commitment, then do everyone a favor and stay single.
Dear Heavenly Father, on our wedding day, we vowed to stay committed to each other until “Death do us part.” When we joyfully made that promise, we didn’t know how many hardships we’d need to walk through together. We didn’t realize the amount of tears we’d shed or just how difficult marriage would be at times. Please help us to reject the popular idea that love should always be easy. We want to be ready to work on the commitment, selflessness, understanding, and sacrifice that it takes to have a thriving marriage. Show us how to continually embrace true and lasting Biblical love towards each other. Please convict us when we need to repent from a sin or when we should extend forgiveness so that our home may flourish under the guidance of Your light and truth. In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen.
In Jesus,

Standing Strong Through the Storm - THE HOLY SPIRIT

THE HOLY SPIRIT

“If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
~ Luke 11:13 (NIV)

Imagine the Christian movement in your country suddenly cut off from all those who are now its leaders! In the period of confusion that immediately follows a takeover, some small groups of Christians may be able to move to a different locality and become underground churches, but they must leave their “institutional forms” behind.

But who would lead such groups? Who would provide leadership for “house” churches and “family” churches? God, through the Holy Spirit, would raise up and equip leaders for His church in such circumstances, as He always had in the past. The members of a home fellowship must be prepared to accept the leadership of the Spirit and of those through whom He chooses to minister.

When regular lay Christians actually begin to understand that they can pray directly to the Lord, when they can take a passage of Scripture, written or memorized, and understand it under the direction of the Holy Spirit, they are then on the road to surviving victoriously in whatever set of hostile circumstances that may come along. One exciting discovery will lead to another. These Christians will begin to let the Holy Spirit use them to touch the lives of others and minister to their needs. No authority on earth can destroy this kind of spiritual church!

In China, a Christian woman was in charge of security at a coal mine. The woman suddenly felt the Holy Spirit urging her to pull the alarm lever, even though there was no apparent reason to do so. Although everything seemed quiet and normal, she obeyed the prompting within her. The whole mine was evacuated as a result of the alarm sounding, but when all the men had assembled on the surface, it seemed as if a huge mistake had been made. Just moments later the ground beneath their feet shook and a large section of the mine collapsed from the earthquake.

Because of this sister’s sensitivity and willingness to obey God’s Holy Spirit, everyone’s life had been saved. Additionally, however, 400 of the miners surrendered their lives to Christ after recognizing that God had miraculously saved them from death.[1]

RESPONSE: Today I will thank God for the gift of His Holy Spirit.

PRAYER: Lord, use me today through Your Spirit to touch the lives of others and minister to their needs.

The NIV Couples Devotional - Praying Together

Praying Together

Acts 1:12–26

They all joined together constantly in prayer.
~ Acts 1:14 (NIV)

I don’t remember when Dan and I started praying together, but I do recall that our first attempts felt awkward. For a long time we only prayed the Lord’s Prayer out loud together. This was safe because we both knew the words to it.

Over time, and as each of us felt more comfortable being emotionally and spiritually naked with each other, we began to talk out loud to God as if he was the third person in our relationship. Now we try to pray out loud together daily. It’s no longer awkward, and it has promoted spiritual intimacy. That was an unexpected bonus of being married to each other. No one had ever told us we could experience this kind of intimacy in our relationship.

Sometimes at night before we fall asleep, we pray out loud. In the darkness, I can listen to Dan’s prayers and get a glimpse into the things he’s grateful for as well as the issues that are troubling him. Hearing him pray reminds me that he’s a work in progress, just as I am. It reminds me that my role in his life is to come alongside him, encourage him and support him. When I hear what’s on his heart, I am reminded again and again of the reasons why I married him. Praying together sets us on the same track with each other and with God.

I met a couple once who were remarkably powerful and effective in their prayer life together. Like the disciples and other believers who joined together constantly in prayer, this couple brought all their needs, praises and requests to God, trusting that he would lead and guide them. They then patiently waited for God’s answers.

In time God blessed this couple with a powerful ministry to special-needs orphans in China. The work keeps growing. This couple trusted God for everything, and, in turn, God entrusted them with the important work of caring for the least, which they are doing with all of their hearts.

It’s one thing to say to your spouse, “I’ll pray for your presentation today,” as you grab your coffee and run out the door to work. It’s another thing to grab your husband by the hand and say, “Let me pray with you before you go.” Jesus promises us that whenever two or three come together in his name, he will also be there (see Matthew 18:20). Why not invite him into your marriage today through prayer?

Marian V. Liautaud

Let’s Talk
  • How regularly do we pray together? In what ways does our frequency of praying together affect our marriage?
  • Why is praying together so important? What does it offer that we wouldn’t gain by praying alone? Are there times when praying privately is better than praying together? When and why?
  • What grace must we extend to each other when we pray? How can we encourage and affirm each other in prayer?
I don’t remember when we started praying together, but I do recall that our first attempts felt awkward.

"Living Dangerously"

Jun. 23, 2018

(Jesus said) "Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."
~ Matthew 26:41 (ESV)

Every year a couple million people wander through Yellowstone National Park.

This they do so they can see some interesting peculiarities of nature. Geysers, paint pots, and acid pools all contribute to the mystical, magical, wonderful look of the place. In spite of the summertime crowds, it's a wonderful location for an individual to get close to nature.

Unfortunately, it is possible for people to get too close to nature.

Consider 59-year-old Kim Hancock of Santa Rosa, California. She, along with a number of friends, was on the boardwalk, a wooden sidewalk which makes it easier for visitors to walk through a difficult area, and keeps them from trampling rare vegetation. The National Park Service shares her story. The group was walking along the boardwalk when that came upon a bison. Now the Park Service has some recommendations for people when they find themselves in such a situation.

In this case, the rangers would have recommended backing away from the bison until there is 75 feet of separation. This particular group of tourists didn't give that wide a berth to the bison. When some of the folks got about 15 feet away, the bison crossed the boardwalk and became "agitated."

The bison charged at Hancock and gored her in the hip. Her hospital says she is in "good condition."

Hancock is one person who can tell you that it's easy to get too close to nature. This year, at Yellowstone there are a number of others who would echo the sentiment. For example, there was a 72-year-old woman who was butted by a bison she hadn't seen. Then there were two people who had unfortunate -- and painful -- encounters with some elk.

So, class, what have we learned about nature today?

* Hopefully, you have learned that while nature may be beautiful and fascinating, it can also be dangerous.

* We should also have learned that if we are truly going to be safe, we would be wise to keep plenty of distance between the more dangerous parts of nature and ourselves.

Those same two sentences can also be applied to the sinful seductions of the devil, the world, and our flesh.

You see, every year the world turns out new variations on its old seductions. Every year people take a look at these temptations, and they find themselves intrigued. They know it might be dangerous, but they take a gamble. They want to get a little closer; they want to see a little better; they want to try the temptation to see if it is just as good as they think it will be.

The next thing they know BAM! some sin has nailed them real good.

When dealing with temptations to evil, it is far better we listen to Jesus. He, who carried our sins to the cross, and gave Himself for our redemption, encourages us to watch and pray so we may avoid temptation. It is his way of saying, "Temptation may look good, but it is too dangerous to mess with."

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, there has been only one Person in this world who has successfully resisted temptation, and that is our Savior. I rejoice that His sacrifice forgives me when I fall into temptation, but I also ask I follow His words and try to avoid temptation. In Jesus' Name, I pray. Amen.

Thuộc Về

Đọc: Ê-sai 44:1-5 | Đọc Kinh Thánh suốt năm: Ê-xơ-tê 9-10; Công vụ 7:1-21

Đức Giê-hô-va là Đấng đã tạo nên con, đã hình thành con từ trong lòng mẹ, và sẽ giúp đỡ con; Ngài phán: Hỡi Gia-cốp, đầy tớ Ta và Giê-su-run mà Ta đã chọn, đừng sợ! Ê-sai 44:2

The Daily Readings for FRIDAY, June 22, 2018

Matthew 18:21-35
The Daily Readings
FRIDAY, June 22, 2018

Old Testament
Numbers 13:1-3; 21-30
Spies Sent into Canaan
13:1 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites; from each of their ancestral tribes you shall send a man, every one a leader among them.” 3 So Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran, according to the command of the Lord, all of them leading men among the Israelites. 21 So they went up and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, near Lebo-hamath. 22 They went up into the Negeb, and came to Hebron; and Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the Anakites, were there. (Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) 23 And they came to the Wadi Eshcol, and cut down from there a branch with a single cluster of grapes, and they carried it on a pole between two of them. They also brought some pomegranates and figs. 24 That place was called the Wadi Eshcol, because of the cluster that the Israelites cut down from there.
The Report of the Spies
25 At the end of forty days they returned from spying out the land. 26 And they came to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of the Israelites in the wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh; they brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. 27 And they told him, “We came to the land to which you sent us; it flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. 28 Yet the people who live in the land are strong, and the towns are fortified and very large; and besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there. 29 The Amalekites live in the land of the Negeb; the Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites live in the hill country; and the Canaanites live by the sea, and along the Jordan.” 30 But Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, “Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it.”

The Epistle
Romans 2:25-3:8
2:25 Circumcision indeed is of value if you obey the law; but if you break the law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision. 26 So, if those who are uncircumcised keep the requirements of the law, will not their uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision? 27 Then those who are physically uncircumcised but keep the law will condemn you that have the written code and circumcision but break the law. 28 For a person is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is true circumcision something external and physical. 29 Rather, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly, and real circumcision is a matter of the heart—it is spiritual and not literal. Such a person receives praise not from others but from God. 3:1 Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the value of circumcision? 2 Much, in every way. For in the first place the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God. 3 What if some were unfaithful? Will their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God? 4 By no means! Although everyone is a liar, let God be proved true, as it is written, “So that you may be justified in your words, and prevail in your judging.” 5 But if our injustice serves to confirm the justice of God, what should we say? That God is unjust to inflict wrath on us? (I speak in a human way.) 6 By no means! For then how could God judge the world? 7 But if through my falsehood God’s truthfulness abounds to his glory, why am I still being condemned as a sinner? 8 And why not say (as some people slander us by saying that we say), “Let us do evil so that good may come”? Their condemnation is deserved!

The Gospel
Matthew 18:21-35
Forgiveness
18:21 Then Peter came and said to him, “Lord, if another member of the church sins against me, how often should I forgive? As many as seven times?” 22 Jesus said to him, “Not seven times, but, I tell you, seventy-seven times.
The Parable of the Unmerciful Servant
23 “For this reason the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves. 24 When he began the reckoning, one who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him; 25 and, as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, together with his wife and children and all his possessions, and payment to be made. 26 So the slave fell on his knees before him, saying, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’ 27 And out of pity for him, the lord of that slave released him and forgave him the debt. 28 But that same slave, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow slaves who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat, he said, ‘Pay what you owe.’ 29 Then his fellow slave fell down and pleaded with him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’ 30 But he refused; then he went and threw him into prison until he would pay the debt. 31 When his fellow slaves saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place. 32 Then his lord summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked slave! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. 33 Should you not have had mercy on your fellow slave, as I had mercy on you?’ 34 And in anger his lord handed him over to be tortured until he would pay his entire debt. 35 So my heavenly Father will also do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”

The Morning Prayer for FRIDAY, June 22, 2018

O blessed Christ, my teacher, my savior, my God: You have commanded me to love others as myself. Yet it is so often easy to see the faults in others, for I see their outside and compare it against what is inside me. I have inflated my goodness and importance in my own mind, but have judged others for the smallest shortcoming, and I am filled by foolish pride. I vow by this prayer that I will strive to follow your Word, to forgive all who have injured me, to turn loose the petty resentments and grudges that poison the world with hatred, and to overlook the faults of others; and I ask to be pardoned wherever I have done injury to my brothers and sisters, who are your beloved children even though they, like me, are sinners. And I vow, when I fall short of your commandment, to seek out and confess my wrongdoing. Forgive me, Holy Christ, and help me to ever amend my life; this I pray, with faith in the grace you have promised to the penitent sinner.
Amen

Morning Devotions with Chaplain Kenny - The Parable of the Unmerciful Servant

The Parable of the Unmerciful Servant

Matthew 18:21-35
21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?” 22 Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times. 23 “Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24 As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand bags of gold was brought to him. 25 Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt. 26 “At this the servant fell on his knees before him. ‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will pay back everything.’ 27 The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go. 28 “But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred silver coins. He grabbed him and began to choke him. ‘Pay back what you owe me!’ he demanded. 29 “His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay it back.’ 30 “But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. 31 When the other servants saw what had happened, they were outraged and went and told their master everything that had happened. 32 “Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. 33 Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ 34 In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed. 35 “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”

THINK ABOUT IT
In this parable the man owed over ten times the maximum amount ever collected by Herod’s sons. The modern equivalent would be around $2.5 billion. He was demanding around $4,000. These numbers were unthinkable to the ancient audience, making Jesus’ parable somewhat humorous.

TALK ABOUT IT
Why is forgiveness so important?

Amen.

Standing Strong Through the Storm - IN STEP WITH THE SPIRIT

IN STEP WITH THE SPIRIT

Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

Jesus said He would not leave us alone but would give us a Helper to be with us forever (John 14:16-18). He taught us that the Holy Spirit would be our Counselor (John 14:26). Jesus also called Him the Spirit of Truth (John 14:17).

Two sisters in southern China came to Christ in a house church meeting. Twenty months later a friend from Hong Kong visited them and asked what they had been doing since their conversion. “Starting home meetings,” was their timid response.

“How many home meetings?” “Only thirty,” was their halting reply.

“How many attend your meetings?” was the next nonchalant question. “Well, at the smallest one about two hundred and eighty!”

Now the questioner was totally involved and quickly continued, “How many attend your largest meeting?” “Not even 5000, only about four thousand nine hundred!”

The Hong Kong Christian was flabbergasted. And in his excitement quickly asked, “How do you ladies—both new Christians—know what to do?”

They simply replied, “We pray. And after we pray, the Holy Spirit tells us what to do!”

It is also obvious that these two ladies were then obedient to the Holy Spirit’s direction. The goal of all Christians should be to live so completely under the control of the Holy Spirit that it can be said we are walking in the Spirit (Galatians 5:25). As Paul reminded the Galatian Christians, they began their Christian lives by a miracle work of God, new birth in Jesus, and they could only expect to continue it by God’s power. This fact is even more evident in a hostile environment.

RESPONSE: The Holy Spirit wants to be my guide and counselor today. I will be obedient to His leading.

PRAYER: Lord, help me to walk this day in the power of Your Holy Spirit. May I also keep in step!

Men of the Bible - Naaman

Naaman

His name means: "Pleasantness"

His work: Naaman was the commander of Syria's army.
His character: A brave man lauded for his military victories, his position would have guaranteed considerable respect in both Syria (known as Aram) and Israel. He would have been accustomed to getting his way, especially with social inferiors, which is what he may have considered Elisha and most everyone else in Israel. His no-nonsense approach made it difficult for him to follow Elisha's instructions.
His sorrow: Naaman suffered from leprosy, not the illness we call Hansen's Disease, but a skin disorder so serious that he left his country to seek healing in Israel.
His triumph: To have received not only the healing he asked for, but a relationship with the one true God.
Key Scriptures: 2 Kings 5; Luke 4:27

A Look at the Man

Naaman, a man whose success as a military commander placed him close to the king of Syria, was faced with a choice. Listen to his wife's servant girl, to the lowly messenger of a prophet, and to one of his own servants, and obey. Or return home with his dignity intact but without the healing he longed for. It wasn't an easy choice for a proud man to make. Give up your sense of how things should go, of how people should treat you, of how you should conduct yourself for the chance—not the certainty—of being healed.

Naaman nearly made the mistake of cherishing his pride at the cost of the miracle he desired. Yet something inside him asserted itself, some hope that perhaps the prophet's crazy instructions were not as crazy as they seemed. So he took a chance, deciding to let go of his own ideas of how his healing should be accomplished, deciding to let go of his own perceptions of how the universe should be ordered.

Naaman's obedience would have felt uncomfortable. How much easier it would have been to play it safe and do what came naturally—to nurse his anger and preserve his dignity. Instead, Naaman did exactly as he was told, and his obedience opened his heart to a greater miracle than the one for which he longed. Instead of a proud man, he became a humble one. Instead of a man incapable of knowing God, he became a man who knew and celebrated the fact that in all the earth there is only one God, the God who loved him and made him whole.

Reflect On: 2 Kings 5:15–17
Praise God: For offering salvation as a free gift to all.
Offer Thanks: For God’s gift of salvation to you.
Confess: Any tendency you may have to think that God cannot or will not work in the lives of certain individuals, groups, or nations.
Ask God: To give you a heart as loving as his for those who are far from him.

Girlfriends in God - Where My Feet Land

Where My Feet Land

Today’s Truth

May He give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed.
~ Psalm 20:4 (NIV)

Friend to Friend

Did you know that the African impala is able to jump over ten feet high and cover a distance of greater than thirty feet? Yet these magnificent creatures can be kept in any zoo by a three-foot wall. The animals will not jump if they cannot see where their feet will land.

I can really relate.

I like to consider myself a woman of great faith, but if I am brutally honest, I tend to be more like an impala. I want to understand every step of God’s plan, and I want to know exactly where the finish line is for that plan.

I have come to the conclusion that many of our problems stem from the fact that we are not prepared to run the race of life. Some people are not even sure what kind of race they are running and wonder where the finish line is - or if there really is a finish line. It seems that we are busier than we have ever been but accomplishing less and experiencing fewer successes than ever before.

Stephen Wright says, "I think God is going to come down and pull civilization over for speeding." Can you relate?

I believe Christians should be goal-oriented and focused people. Setting goals is not about what I want to do with my life. It is about what God wants to do in and through my life. Someone once said that goals are the "rudder of our lives, and God's wisdom is the wind filling the sails."

Should Christians make plans and set goals in life? Absolutely! Is goal planning Biblical? Yes!  In fact, we were created in response to God's plan. Psalm 139:13 says God created our "inmost being" and "knit" us together in our mother's womb. We were created for a reason, and God has a specific plan for each one of us.

God has always had plans and has set goals according to those plans. God created the world with a plan in mind. Can you imagine the bedlam creation would have caused if God had not had a set plan and goal?

Part of God's plan is for each of us to have a personal relationship with Him. The forgiveness of our sin is part of God's plan. God does not ordain chaos and is a God of order and peace - not confusion and turmoil. He wants us to live with purpose and joy and that means we must learn how to plan and set goals that please Him and line up with His Word.

Fitzhugh Dodson said, "Without goals, and plans to reach them, you are like a ship that has set sail with no destination."

Setting goals and making plans is serious business. We should not be so anxious about life that we make rigid plans which are beyond our capacity to keep, nor should we be so lazy that we make no plans at all. The balance is found when we truly and humbly seek God and His plan and then step out in obedience to make our life goals a reality.

Let’s Pray

Father, I need Your direction and guidance in my life. I really want to do what You created me to do. Show me the steps I need to take in order to walk in obedience and faith, and then give me the strength to take those steps.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Now It’s Your Turn

Take the time this week to review and evaluate what you have accomplished since January. Are you where you thought you would be? What goals did you achieve? Record your answer in your journal.

Read Psalm 20:4: "May He (God) give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed." According to this verse, what is the relationship between the desires of your heart and successful plans?

"Surprise! Surprise!"

Jun. 22, 2018

But Peter said, "I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the Name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!" And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong. And leaping up he stood and began to walk, and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. And all the people saw him walking and praising God.
~ Acts 3:6-9 (ESV)

Two weeks ago, Ohio's Ravenna High School had its graduation ceremonies.

The event was pretty standard fare. The girls were crying because they realized their lives were going to be changing and some BFFs were probably going to be demoted. The boys were laughing and joking as they remembered certain exciting or rebellious days from the past. You know how it goes: "Hey, Tom, do you remember the time you ...," and the teller of the story would fill in the blank with one of Tom's misadventures.

The teachers were present, looking on with admiration at some students who always did their best and with amazement at other pupils who managed, somehow, to achieve a grade-point average which allowed them to walk with the class.

Naturally, there were the proud parents and relatives. Armed with a plethora of cameras, they took pictures of their children; pictures of their children with family; pictures of their children with friends; pictures of their children with the families of their friends; and pictures with total strangers.

Yes, everything was pretty much standard fare except for one student: Lexi Wright.

Wright was special because she had cerebral palsy, and nobody expected her to "walk" with her class. Her confinement in the wheelchair prevented that. Sorry, I got that wrong. One person, Wright, was sure she was going to walk, and to that end she privately practiced walking for the entire year.

That's how it came to pass that at graduation, Wright stood up, and with the help of a walker, made it across that stage. Her mother, who knew nothing of her plans, was in tears, and the audience gave her a standing ovation. Wright, her parents, her friends, and her classmates can be proud. With sheer dedication and commitment, she did as good as any human could.

Indeed, only the Lord could do better.

Take a look at the text from Acts where it speaks of a man who had been crippled since birth. Peter, by the power of Jesus' Name, heals the man. Amazingly, the man did not need any therapy or the assistance of a walker. The Lord's healing was complete, total, and absolute. That is shown as the man leaps as He enters the temple, praising God.

Most people, when they read that story, they say, "I wish the Lord would heal me that way."

To which my reply is "He has!" When your sins were forgiven, all your sins were forgiven: completely, totally, absolutely. When the Lord invited you back into His family of faith, there was no probationary period. And the day will come when you breathe your last in this world, then, in an instant, in the twinkling of an eye, you will awaken in the home Jesus has given you.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, I give thanks You have made me well. I rejoice in the blood of the Savior whose sacrifice has forgiven me, saved me, and made me a member of the family of faith. For the completeness of this miracle, I praise His Name. Amen.

ORACIÓN: Señor Jesús, tú has hecho la diferencia.
