The Forward Day by Day Meditation for September 13, 2016

From Forward Day By Day
Written by Jonathan Melton

Psalm 62:13-14 God has spoken once, twice have I heard it, that power belongs to God. Steadfast love is yours, O Lord, for you repay everyone according to his deeds.

One of our morning psalms evokes the ending of the Lord’s Prayer, “For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.” These words both name our hope and call us to surrender.

Power belongs to God. This lesson calls us to learn to wait for God in silence. When we forget this lesson, we often devolve into violence—against our own hearts and against one another. We reveal our trust in God when we are brave enough to love our sisters and brothers, to learn to truly love ourselves as creatures made in the image of God.

To love each other well requires a level of patience that can make us feel impotent in our silence and lonely in our waiting. When we are in companionship with each other and Jesus, we discover that love is always both/and—swift and slow, erupting and enduring, dying and rising. More than anything, love requires us to surrender the natural inclination to save our own lives. God has given us all we require to take the time to love each other well.
