The Daily Meditation for October 22, 2016

From Forward Day By Day
Written by Scott B. Hayashi

Ecclesiasticus 15:14 (NRSV) It was he who created humankind in the beginning, and he left them in the power of their own free choice.

When I wake, I have a decision to make. Do I stay in bed a few more minutes or do I get up? It is my power to choose. During the rest of my day, I will make many more decisions. Will I offer my day to God? Will I drive my car over the speed limit? Decisions are mine to make because I have been given the power of free choice, of free will—an awesome power to wield. We would all do well to be more conscious of how we exercise this power.

The systems of the world are interconnected. Decisions that I make in Utah may strengthen an unjust system on the other side of the world. When I buy an inexpensive shirt made in a sweatshop in China, am I willing to think about the person who made it—about what kind of life he or she lives in order for me to buy a $10 garment? Or do I pat myself on the back for my skills as a bargain shopper?

As I offer my day to God, what impact does this kind of dedication have on my choices? How do my choices change the world and preach the gospel?
