John 4:24
God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.All worship is not godly worship. Serving God in the same way false gods were venerated meant completely dishonoring His holy name. The Israelites were strictly forbidden from imitating the ways of the ungodly nations around them so they would be set apart—a people representing the one true God (Ex. 19:5,6; 1 Pet. 2:9). They were not to fit in; they were to stand out. This is true for us as well. God calls us to worship Him in Spirit and in truth (John 4:24); therefore, we should “worship in the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh” (Phil. 3:3).
