Grateful Giving

But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this?
1 Chronicles 29:14a (NIV)

In Kirsten's role as a leader in a local ministry, she had the task of inviting others to serve as group discussion leaders. She communicated the commitment this role required, emphasizing interaction with group members through meetings and regular calls. Despite her hesitation to ask for such a commitment, knowing the sacrifices involved, she was often moved by the heartfelt responses she received. People expressed their honor in being asked, attributing their willingness to give back to their gratitude towards God for His blessings in their lives.

Reflection:
In the biblical narrative of David and the temple, as depicted in 1 Chronicles 29:14, David's reaction to his capacity to contribute generously to God's temple is marked by a profound humility and a deep sense of gratitude. He is profoundly moved by his own unworthiness and the immense grace of God, acknowledging that all his and Israel's possessions are gifts from God. This acknowledgment is not only a testament to his humility but also highlights his deep gratitude, leading him to give humbly and generously. David's response is a powerful demonstration of the humility and thankfulness that should characterize our own giving.

Gratitude as the Foundation of Giving:
Our ability to give—whether it be our time, talents, or treasures—is not merely a testament to our own capabilities, but a reflection of the abundance God has poured into our lives. When we give, we are participating in the cycle of grace that begins and ends with God.

Humility in Our Offerings:
David's question, "But who am I?" is a powerful reminder of our position before God. It’s an acknowledgment that we are not the owners, but stewards of what we have been given. This humility doesn’t diminish our role; rather, it enhances the beauty of our giving, making it a joyful act of worship rather than a burdensome obligation.

Recognizing the Source:
Everything we have comes from God's hand. This truth shifts our perspective from one of entitlement to one of stewardship. When we see ourselves as caretakers of God's blessings, our giving becomes an act of responsible and loving management.

A Response of Joyful Generosity:
David's joy in giving reflects the heart God desires in us. Our giving should not be grudging or out of compulsion, but a joyful response to the goodness of God in our lives. It’s an opportunity to express our gratitude and love for Him.

Practical Application:
  • Mindful Giving: Next time you give, whether in church, to a charity, or even in helping a friend, remember that it is an act of worship and gratitude towards God.
  • Reflect on Your Blessings: Regularly take time to count your blessings and recognize God’s hand in your life. This habit can transform your perspective on giving.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your abundant generosity towards us. Help us to always remember that all we have is from Your hand. Instill in us a heart of grateful giving, that we may joyfully contribute to Your work and reflect Your love and generosity in our lives. Amen.
