1 Corinthians 1:4-5
4 I always thank my God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. 5 For in him you have been enriched in every way—with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge.
In verses 4-5, Paul begins by expressing his gratitude towards God for the believers in Corinth. His gratitude stems not from any merit of the Corinthians themselves, but because of the grace God has bestowed upon them through Jesus Christ. This grace wasn't limited to a spiritual context but manifested in tangible gifts that the Corinthian church possessed.

Paul recognizes that the Corinthians have been enriched in every way. This enrichment encompasses two particular gifts: all kinds of speech and all knowledge. The reference to speech can be understood as the Corinthians' ability to articulate their faith, possibly hinting at the gift of tongues, which was prevalent and controversial in their community. All knowledge is likely a nod to the wisdom and understanding the Corinthians had concerning spiritual matters.

However, while Paul acknowledges these gifts, his later discussions in the letter suggest that the Corinthians might have misused or misunderstood the purpose and proper use of these gifts, leading to divisions and pride. The true essence of these gifts was not self-promotion or superiority but to edify the church and glorify God.

In summary, these verses set the tone for the epistle by emphasizing the abundant grace in Jesus Christ and the spiritual gifts endowed upon the believers. But as the letter unfolds, Paul provides necessary corrections and guidance on how these gifts should be rightly understood and used for the edification of the whole church.

Scripture from the Holy Bible, New International Version®, NIV®.
The First Letter to the Corinthians is one of the apostle Paul's most personal and direct writings, addressing a myriad of issues that the early Christian community in Corinth faced. The church in Corinth was diverse, being in a strategic port city and a melting pot of various cultures, traditions, and beliefs. Amidst such diversity and the challenges that come with it, Paul wanted to remind them of the essence of their faith and unity in Christ.
