Waters in the Wilderness
I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water.
Isaiah 41:18b
Introduction
Isaiah 41:18b says, "I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water." This promise speaks to God’s power to bring life and sustenance to desolate places, a transformation only possible through divine intervention. In reflecting on this verse, we find a modern-day parallel in the story of Burnell Cotlon, who brought hope and renewal to the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.
Reflection
Hurricane Katrina in 2005 left the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans in ruins, with many of its residents displaced and infrastructure destroyed. Amid this devastation, Burnell Cotlon, a resident of the neighborhood, saw an opportunity to restore life to his community. Using his savings and persevering against numerous obstacles, he opened the first grocery store in the area since the hurricane. This act of determination and care for his neighbors transformed a "wilderness" into a thriving hub of community and sustenance.
Cotlon’s efforts mirror the divine promise in Isaiah 41:18b. Just as God promises to make the wilderness a pool of water and the dry land springs of water, Cotlon’s grocery store became a source of life and nourishment for a community in desperate need. His faith and resilience turned a barren place into a fertile ground of hope and revival.
Application
Reflecting on Burnell Cotlon's story challenges us to consider our own roles in bringing life and hope to desolate places around us. It encourages us to act as conduits of God’s transformative power in our communities. Whether it’s through small acts of kindness, community service, or larger projects, we are called to be vessels of God’s promise, turning wilderness into pools of water.
Think about areas in your own life or community that resemble a wilderness. How can you, with God’s help, transform these places into sources of life and hope? What steps can you take to support and uplift those around you who are in need?
Conclusion
Burnell Cotlon’s story is a powerful reminder that God can use us to bring about His promises here on earth. Through faith, determination, and action, we can be agents of change, bringing life and hope to the desolate places around us. As we reflect on Isaiah 41:18b, let us be inspired to seek out and transform the wildernesses in our lives, trusting in God’s provision and guidance.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your promise to bring life to the wilderness and springs of water to the dry land. We are inspired by Burnell Cotlon’s example of faith and perseverance in the face of devastation. Help us to be like him, conduits of Your transformative power in our own communities. Show us the wildernesses around us and guide us in bringing hope, life, and sustenance to those in need. Strengthen our faith and resolve as we work to make Your promises a reality in our world. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
