Rebuilding the Altar of Our Hearts

From the first day of the seventh month they began to offer burnt offerings to the LORD. But the foundation of the temple of the LORD was not yet laid. (Ezra 3:6)

Introduction

Ezra 3:6 states, "From the first day of the seventh month they began to offer burnt offerings to the Lord. But the foundation of the temple of the Lord was not yet laid." This verse captures a pivotal moment for the Israelites as they returned from exile, a time of renewal and rebuilding. Today, we reflect on how God calls each of us to build and rebuild aspects of our lives, ministries, and communities, starting with the foundation of our hearts.

Reflection

Upon their return to Jerusalem, the Israelites faced a monumental task. The city lay in ruins, and the temple, the center of their worship and identity, was destroyed. Despite the daunting task, they began by rebuilding the altar and offering sacrifices to God, even before the temple's foundation was laid. This act of faith demonstrated their commitment to worship and dependence on God.

In our lives, we may also face moments where we are called to rebuild. It could be a broken relationship, a struggling ministry, or a wavering faith. Like the Israelites, our first step should be to restore our connection with God, placing Him at the center of our efforts. By prioritizing worship and devotion, we lay the spiritual foundation necessary for any rebuilding process.

Application

1. Identify Areas for Rebuilding: Take a moment to reflect on the areas in your life where you sense God is calling you to rebuild. It might be a personal habit, a family relationship, or a community project.

2. Prioritize Worship and Devotion: Before diving into the practical steps of rebuilding, commit to a period of prayer and worship. Just as the Israelites began with the altar, start by seeking God's guidance and strength.

3. Trust in God's Timing: The temple's foundation wasn't laid immediately, but the Israelites' faithfulness in worship prepared them for the work ahead. Trust that God's timing is perfect, and your acts of faith are laying the groundwork for His plans.

4. Involve Your Community: Rebuilding is often not a solitary task. Involve others who share your vision or are affected by the same areas needing restoration. Together, you can support each other and witness God's faithfulness.

Conclusion

The story of the Israelites rebuilding the altar and, eventually, the temple serves as a powerful reminder that God calls us to be builders and restorers. By prioritizing our relationship with Him and acting in faith, we can undertake even the most daunting tasks. Remember that every significant rebuilding project starts with laying the right foundation—a heart devoted to God.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts open and ready to be rebuilt. Just as the Israelites began their journey by restoring the altar, help us to start with worship and devotion to You. Guide us in identifying the areas where You are calling us to rebuild and give us the strength and wisdom to proceed. May we trust in Your perfect timing and involve those around us in this sacred work. We thank You for Your faithfulness and the assurance that with You, all things are possible. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
