The Blessing of Unity
It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion. For there the LORD ordained his blessing, life forevermore. (Psalm 133:3)
Introduction
In Psalm 133:3, we read, "It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion. For there the LORD ordained his blessing, life forevermore." This verse paints a beautiful picture of how unity brings blessings, like the refreshing dew that nourishes the land. Today, we reflect on the transformative power of unity and how it has manifested in the city of East Saint Louis, Illinois.
Reflection
Psalm 133 celebrates the beauty and goodness of living together in unity. The imagery of the dew of Hermon falling on Mount Zion signifies a life-giving presence that fosters growth and sustains life. In a world often marked by division and strife, unity stands out as a divine blessing that brings healing and renewal. The recent statistics from East Saint Louis serve as a modern testament to this biblical truth. By 2023, the city recorded a significant drop in homicides and crime, a 31 percent and 37 percent decrease, respectively. This remarkable change highlights the power of community efforts, collaboration, and a shared commitment to peace and safety.
Working together, the city’s Public Safety Enforcement Group—including the state and city police, the city school district, and a faith organization—combined efforts to turn the tide for all citizens. All members of the city partnership joined in to help citizens, demonstrating the practical application of Psalm 133’s message. The school district’s Wraparound Wellness Center, which she leads, involves school social workers, nurses, and staff to support kids impacted by crime or accidents, while other agencies share their strengths. Police committed to talking more with people on the street—and listening. This united approach not only addresses immediate needs but also builds a foundation for sustained peace and community well-being.
Application
As we ponder these developments, we are reminded of the impact we can have when we work together toward common goals. Just as the dew of Hermon brings nourishment, our collective actions can bring life and hope to our communities. Here are a few ways we can foster unity in our own lives:
1. Build Relationships: Take time to know your neighbors and build genuine connections. Strong communities are formed through strong relationships.
2. Collaborate for Change: Partner with local organizations, churches, and civic groups to address community issues. Unity in purpose can lead to significant positive outcomes.
3. Promote Peace: Be a peacemaker in your interactions. Encourage dialogue and understanding, and work towards resolving conflicts amicably.
Conclusion
The decline in crime in East Saint Louis is a beacon of hope, reminding us of the blessings that flow from unity. Just as the dew of Hermon brings life to the mountains, our efforts to live in harmony can bring renewal and peace to our communities. Let us strive to be agents of unity, trusting in the Lord’s promise that where there is unity, there is blessing and life forevermore.
Prayer
Gracious God, we thank You for the beautiful reminder in Psalm 133 of the blessings that come from unity. We praise You for the positive changes in East Saint Louis and the testimony of hope it brings. Help us to be instruments of Your peace, fostering unity in our families, communities, and beyond. May Your refreshing presence, like the dew of Hermon, nourish and sustain us as we work together for the common good. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
