Living and Reigning with Christ

The saying is sure: If we have died with him, we will also live with him. (2 Timothy 2:11)

Introduction

In 2 Timothy 2:11, we find a profound statement: "The saying is sure: If we have died with him, we will also live with him." This passage reminds us of the eternal truth that our union with Christ in His death assures us of our union with Him in His resurrection. As we reflect on this verse, let us also draw inspiration from the hymn O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing, which celebrates the glory and power of Jesus Christ.

Reflection

2 Timothy 2:11 calls us to remember that our life in Christ is both a present reality and a future hope. When we accept Jesus as our Savior, we are united with Him in His death, symbolizing the death of our old selves and our sinful nature. This spiritual death, however, leads to a new life—a life that is abundant and eternal.

Charles Wesley’s hymn, O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing, captures the exuberant joy of this new life in Christ. The hymn begins with a longing to praise God with a thousand tongues, reflecting the believer's deep gratitude for salvation and the overwhelming desire to proclaim the greatness of Jesus. Each verse highlights different aspects of Christ's redeeming work, His power over sin and death, and His ability to transform lives.

Application

Living with Christ means allowing His resurrection power to influence every aspect of our lives. Here are some practical ways to apply this truth:

1. Daily Surrender: Each day, consciously surrender your will to God, acknowledging that your old self has died with Christ and you are now living a new life in Him.

2. Joyful Praise: As the hymn suggests, find opportunities to praise God throughout your day. Use music, prayer, and scripture to cultivate a heart of gratitude and worship.

3. Witnessing: Share the good news of Christ’s resurrection with others. Let your life be a testimony to the transformative power of Jesus.

4. Serving Others: Reflect Christ’s love by serving those around you. Show compassion, kindness, and humility, remembering that you are living out the life Christ has given you.

Conclusion

The promise of 2 Timothy 2:11 is a powerful reminder of our identity in Christ. We have died with Him, and now we live with Him. This new life is not just for us; it is meant to be shared and proclaimed. As O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing joyfully declares, Jesus’ name and power should be our anthem. Let us live each day in the fullness of this truth, allowing our lives to sing His praises.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the assurance that if we have died with Christ, we will also live with Him. Help us to live out this truth each day, surrendering our lives to You and proclaiming Your greatness. Fill our hearts with joy and gratitude, and may our lives be a testament to Your transforming power. Empower us to serve others with the love of Christ and to share the good news of His resurrection with those around us. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
