Treasure in Clay Jars
We have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us. (2 Corinthians 4:7)
Introduction
In 2 Corinthians 4:7, Paul writes, "But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us." This verse speaks to the profound truth that God's power is made perfect in our weaknesses. Today, we reflect on the life and ministry of Reverend William Barber II, whose journey as a disabled pastor highlights the extraordinary power of God working through human frailty.
Reflection
Reverend William Barber II's story is one of perseverance and faith. Diagnosed with a debilitating disease that causes the vertebrae of the spine to fuse together, Barber faced the hurtful comment that he might need to find another profession because the church wouldn’t want a disabled pastor. Despite the physical and emotional pain, Barber did not let this discourage him. Instead, he leaned into his faith, believing that God's power would shine through his weakness.
Barber's ministry has not only survived but thrived, becoming a powerful voice for justice and equality. His disability, which could have been seen as a limitation, has become a testament to God's strength working through him. In his weakness, God's power is evident, proving that the treasure of the gospel is held in fragile, human vessels to showcase divine strength.
Application
Reverend Barber's story invites us to consider our own weaknesses and challenges. We may feel inadequate or believe that our limitations disqualify us from fulfilling God's call. However, 2 Corinthians 4:7 reminds us that it is precisely through our weaknesses that God's power is most clearly demonstrated. Our "clay jars" are not meant to be perfect; they are meant to show the perfection of God's strength.
Reflect on an area of your life where you feel weak or inadequate. How might God be using that very weakness to display His power and glory? Consider how you can, like Reverend Barber, lean into your faith and trust that God's extraordinary power will work through you despite any limitations.
Conclusion
Reverend William Barber II's life and ministry are powerful reminders that our weaknesses do not disqualify us from God's work. Instead, they become the very means through which God's power is revealed. As we acknowledge our frailty and depend on God's strength, we can become vessels of His extraordinary power, bringing hope and justice to the world.
Prayer
Gracious God, we thank You for the treasure of the gospel that You have entrusted to us, fragile and imperfect though we are. We are inspired by the example of Reverend William Barber II and his unwavering faith in the face of disability. Help us to see our weaknesses not as limitations but as opportunities for Your power to be displayed. Strengthen us to trust in Your might and to lean on Your grace. Use us, in our frailty, to bring Your love and justice to those around us. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
