Quiet Acts of Kindness
I was overjoyed when some of the friends arrived and testified to your faithfulness to the truth, namely how you walk in the truth. (3 John 1:3)
Introduction
In 3 John 1:3, we read, "I was overjoyed when some of the friends arrived and testified to your faithfulness to the truth, namely how you walk in the truth." This verse speaks of the joy that comes from witnessing others living out the truth of the Gospel in their daily lives. Faithfulness to the truth is not just about what we believe but how we express that belief in our actions, especially through small acts of kindness that often go unnoticed.
Reflection
In the bustling environment of a seminary, where minds are constantly engaged in deep theological discussions, and hearts are being formed for ministry, it is easy to overlook the simple, everyday acts of service that embody the teachings of Christ. One day, during a lunch gathering at this seminary, an eminent theologian known for his profound wisdom and scholarly contributions quietly performed a humble act of kindness.
Amidst the conversation and fellowship, he noticed that the school custodian, a man whose diligent work often went unnoticed, would be late in joining the meal due to his duties. Without drawing attention to himself, the theologian discreetly set aside a plate of food for the custodian, ensuring that he would not miss out on the meal. This small, thoughtful gesture was not announced or publicized, but it spoke volumes about the theologian’s character and his understanding of living out the truth of the Gospel.
This story is reminiscent of the biblical account of Jesus washing the feet of His disciples in John 13:1-17. Just as Jesus, the Master and Teacher, humbled Himself to serve His disciples, the theologian, a respected figure in the academic community, humbled himself to serve the custodian. In both instances, the act of service was not about gaining recognition or praise but about expressing love and humility, demonstrating what it means to follow Christ’s example.
Application
In our own lives, we may not always have the opportunity to perform grand acts of service or charity, but we can all engage in small acts of kindness that reflect Christ’s love. Whether it’s setting aside a plate of food for someone who is late, offering a kind word to a colleague, or simply being present and attentive to the needs of those around us, these actions are powerful expressions of our faith.
As we go about our daily routines, let us be mindful of the opportunities we have to serve others in quiet, unassuming ways. These moments, though small, contribute to the tapestry of our witness as followers of Christ, showing the world that we not only speak the truth but also walk in it.
Conclusion
The theologian’s simple act of setting aside a plate of food may have seemed insignificant to those who were unaware, but to the custodian, it was a profound expression of care and consideration. In the same way, our small acts of kindness, motivated by love, can have a lasting impact on those around us. As we reflect on 3 John 1:3, may we be encouraged to walk in the truth by serving others with humility and grace, following the example set by Christ Himself.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the example of faithfulness and love that we see in the life of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Help us to walk in the truth by serving others with humility, even in the smallest ways. May our actions reflect Your love and bring joy to those around us. Teach us to be mindful of the needs of others and to respond with kindness and compassion. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
