Glorifying Christ in Unity

Together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Romans 15:6)

Introduction

In Romans 15:6, the Apostle Paul exhorts believers that "together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ." This verse captures the essence of Christian unity and the purpose of our togetherness—to glorify God. Reflecting on the life and teachings of James Innell Packer, an influential theologian and writer, we find a profound example of a life dedicated to this very purpose.

Reflection

J. I. Packer's life was a testament to the power of unity in Christ. His seminal work, Knowing God, not only educated but also unified believers across various denominations around the deep, joyful pursuit of knowing our Creator more intimately. Packer’s writings often returned to the central theme of glorifying Christ, a mission that he believed was the primary purpose of every believer's life.

Imagine a vast orchestra, each musician skilled with their instrument, yet the beauty of the symphony only emerges when each plays in harmony under the conductor's guidance. Similarly, Packer saw each Christian's life as a unique instrument in God's grand symphony, designed to play in harmony with others to produce a melody that glorifies God. When we live in unity, supporting and uplifting one another, we truly glorify Christ in every way, as Packer urged.

Application

Living to glorify Christ in every way involves both personal devotion and communal unity. We can apply this in our daily lives by:

1. Deepening Our Understanding: Commit to regular study of the Scriptures and theological works, like Packer's Knowing God, to grow in our knowledge and love of God.

2. Fostering Community: Engage actively in your church and community, seeking ways to support and encourage others in their faith journeys.

3. Living Intentionally: In every decision, ask how it might glorify Christ. This could transform simple daily interactions into profound testimonies of faith.

Conclusion

As we remember J. I. Packer, let us embrace his final exhortation to "Glorify Christ every way." Our unity as believers isn't just for our benefit but is a powerful testament to the world of God's love and grace. In a divided world, let our unified voices in Christ be a beacon of hope and a testament to God's transformative power.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the life and legacy of Your servant J. I. Packer, who spent his days glorifying You. Teach us to seek unity with our brothers and sisters in Christ, that together we might glorify You with one voice. Help us to live out our days with the intention of reflecting Your love and grace in every action. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
