Seeking First the Kingdom

But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matthew 6:33)

Introduction

In Matthew 6:33, Jesus instructs His followers with a profound simplicity that resonates through the ages: "But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." This verse is a cornerstone of the Christian faith, emphasizing the priority of spiritual over material pursuits. It encourages believers to focus on God's kingdom and righteousness, promising that life's necessities will follow.

Reflection

Imagine standing before the Watts Towers in Los Angeles, a collection of seventeen interconnected sculptural structures created single-handedly by Italian immigrant Simon Rodia. In 1921, Rodia began transforming his small piece of land into a monumental testament to dedication and vision. Without formal training in architecture or engineering, he built the towers over 33 years, using simple tools and materials he gathered, like broken glass, seashells, generic pottery, and discarded steel. Rodia's work is a vivid parable of Matthew 6:33.

Like Rodia’s singular focus on his life’s work, Jesus calls us to a similar dedication in seeking God's kingdom. Just as Rodia collected everyday items to fulfill his vision, we are called to gather spiritual truths and apply them, building our lives into a mosaic that glorifies God. The towers, now a symbol of creativity and resilience, began with one man's commitment to an unseen blueprint, echoing our call to trust in God’s plan and build our lives on His promises.

Application

How can we apply the lesson of Matthew 6:33 in our daily lives, inspired by Sam Rodia's dedication? Begin each day by seeking God’s direction through prayer and scripture. Prioritize your spiritual growth by participating in church and community life. Use your talents and resources to serve others, reflecting God’s righteousness. Trust that by focusing on these spiritual endeavors, your material needs will be met according to God’s perfect timing and provision.

Conclusion

Sam Rodia’s Watts Towers is a powerful metaphor for the spiritual life. Just as Rodia built his towers with persistence and faith in his vision, we are encouraged to build our lives centered on the kingdom of God. By doing so, we not only enrich our spiritual journey but also ensure that the One who knows us best takes care of our earthly needs.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the reminder in Matthew 6:33 to seek first Your kingdom and Your righteousness. Help us to prioritize our relationship with You above all else. Give us the wisdom to build our lives on the foundation of Your love and truth, trusting that You will provide all that we need. May we reflect Your glory as we contribute to Your kingdom, just as Rodia's towers reflect his dedication and creativity. Strengthen our faith, and guide us each day to live out Your will. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
