Service Above Self
Whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant. (Matthew 20:26b)
Introduction
As we observe All Souls Day, a time when we remember and pray for the souls who have departed, it’s fitting to reflect on the nature of service and humility as exemplified in the Gospel of Matthew. In chapter 20, verses 20-21, we see the mother of the sons of Zebedee asking Jesus to grant her sons places of honor in His kingdom. This request sets the stage for a profound teaching in verse 26, where Jesus declares, "but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant."
Reflection
In the quest for greatness, the world often points us toward achievements that elevate our status, power, or wealth. However, Jesus presents a radical counter-cultural idea—true greatness lies in servanthood. This teaching is not only counterintuitive but deeply transformative.
Consider the story of an elderly woman named Ethel, who spent her years in a quiet, unnoticed service. In her community, Ethel was known for her gentle spirit and the love she poured out in caring for neglected neighborhood gardens. Her dedication turned forgotten corners into spaces of beauty, bringing joy to others without seeking recognition. Ethel’s life beautifully illustrates Jesus’ teaching: she sought no titles or accolades but was great in the kingdom of heaven because she served.
Application
As we remember those who have gone before us this All Souls Day, let us consider how we might embody the spirit of servanthood in our own lives. Whether it’s through acts of kindness, volunteering our time, or supporting those in need, we are called to serve others as a testament to our faith. By doing so, we not only honor the memory of those who have passed but also reflect the love of Christ in our daily actions.
Conclusion
All Souls Day offers a poignant reminder of our temporal nature and the lasting impact of our actions. In remembering the departed, we are reminded of the values they held dear and the legacy they left behind. As followers of Christ, we are encouraged to leave a legacy marked not by worldly greatness but by the greatness of our service to others.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, as we remember the souls of the departed this All Souls Day, kindle in us the desire to serve and love as Jesus taught. Help us to embrace humility and find our greatness in the quiet moments of service to our neighbors, our community, and our world. May our lives reflect Your love and Your promise of eternal life. Grant peace and rest to those who have gone before us, and inspire us to live each day in the light of Your grace. Amen.
