Faith Over Fear

The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1)

Introduction

Today is Friday the 13th, a date surrounded by superstition and fear in popular culture. But as Christians, we are called to reject fear and superstition, placing our faith in the sovereignty and goodness of God. Psalm 27:1 reminds us that God is our light and stronghold, giving us confidence to face uncertainties without fear.

Reflection

In our world, Friday the 13th often symbolizes bad luck or ominous circumstances. People may avoid making decisions, taking risks, or even leaving their homes. But fear, whether tied to superstition or life's challenges, can cripple our faith if left unchecked.

Let’s consider a story about a young boy who was afraid of the dark. Every night, he would cry out in fear, convinced there were monsters lurking in the shadows. His father, a man of faith, sat beside him and read Psalm 27 aloud. Night after night, the father gently reminded the boy that God's light dispels all darkness. Over time, the boy memorized the verse and began to recite it whenever he felt afraid. Eventually, his fear gave way to trust in God’s protection.

Like the boy in this story, we can conquer our fears by clinging to God’s promises. Friday the 13th is just another day that the Lord has made. We need not be consumed by fear, because we are held by the One who governs all things.

Application

  • Reject superstition: Instead of succumbing to myths or fears, use this day to reflect on God’s faithfulness.

  • Replace fear with faith: Memorize a verse like Psalm 27:1 to recite during moments of anxiety.

  • Shine God’s light: Be a source of encouragement to someone who may be feeling overwhelmed or superstitious. Share the hope and confidence you have in Christ.

Conclusion

Friday the 13th is a reminder that the world’s fears are not our fears. God is our light, our salvation, and our stronghold. No day, no circumstance, and no superstition can overshadow the truth of God’s love and protection. Let us live boldly, trusting in the One who holds every moment in His hands.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for being our light and salvation. Forgive us for the times we allow fear or superstition to cloud our faith. Help us to trust You completely and to walk in the confidence of Your love and protection. Use us to bring light to others who may feel afraid or uncertain. We commit this day and every day into Your care, knowing that You are sovereign over all. In Jesus' name, Amen.
