Serving with Joy: A Heart Willing to Help

Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. (Hebrews 13:16)

Introduction

Saturdays can often feel like a day for personal restoration—a chance to relax or prepare for something we cherish. Yet, as followers of Christ, we are called to be attentive to the needs of others, even when it may disrupt our plans. The writer of Hebrews reminds us that acts of kindness and generosity are not burdens but sacrifices that honor God.

Reflection

This particular Saturday, I had planned to practice my Native American flute in preparation for an upcoming performance. Later, I looked forward to joining my wife for an evening Christmas parade—a cherished time together to celebrate the season of hope and joy.

However, while I was focused on my preparations, I noticed that the ranch owners, where I volunteer to work with the horses, were in need of help. Without a second thought, I set aside my plans to assist them, dedicating the rest of the day to serving their needs. This unprompted act of stepping in to help, without hesitation or complaint, beautifully demonstrates the essence of Christian service—a readiness to put love into action.

This choice mirrors the story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37). The Samaritan also had a destination and likely a schedule, but when he saw a man in need, compassion moved him to act. He put aside his plans and offered what he could, sacrificing convenience for the sake of another.

Application

Every day presents opportunities to embody Christ’s love. These moments often come unexpectedly, nudging us to pause our agendas and lend a helping hand. This kind of sacrifice isn’t about neglecting our own responsibilities but recognizing that God may have a greater purpose for our day than we originally envisioned.

Ask yourself: How can I remain attentive to the needs of those around me? Am I willing to pause, shift priorities, or even delay my plans to meet someone else’s needs? Your Saturday became a testament to God’s love—not through your music or presence at the parade but through your humble service to others.

Conclusion

God’s greatest work often happens in the ordinary moments when we choose to serve instead of being served. Your Saturday may not have gone as planned, but it was spent in a way that surely pleased God. Remember, the sacrifices of time and energy offered in love are far more impactful than the perfect performance or the most picturesque parade.

Prayer

Gracious and loving God, Thank You for the opportunities You give us to serve others. Help us to have open hearts and willing hands, ready to pause our plans to meet the needs You place before us. May our actions reflect Your love and bring glory to Your name. Teach us to delight in serving others, just as Christ delighted in serving us. Bless those we serve, and may our sacrifices be pleasing to You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
