Shining Light in a Day of Shadows

Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. (Isaiah 60:1)

Introduction

The Day of Epiphany, traditionally celebrated on January 6, reminds us of the revelation of Christ to the world. It is a time to rejoice in the light that has come to dispel darkness. Yet, in recent history, this sacred day was overshadowed by the painful memory of division and chaos during the events at the U.S. Capitol. How do we, as followers of Christ, reconcile the call to shine His light in a world that often seems engulfed in shadows?

Reflection

On Epiphany, we remember the Magi following a star to Bethlehem, their journey marked by faith and hope. But contrasted with that holy journey, we see the Capitol riots, a stark image of human brokenness. The contrast between the divine revelation of Christ’s light and the human display of darkness is striking.

A pastor once recounted visiting a coal mine where all lights were extinguished to demonstrate the utter blackness below ground. Then, a single small lamp was lit. Its faint glow transformed the space, enabling them to see the path forward. The darkness didn’t vanish, but the light was enough to guide their steps.

In a similar way, the events of January 6 remind us of the darkness that still exists in our world. Yet Isaiah 60:1 calls us to arise and shine, not because the world is devoid of darkness, but because the glory of the Lord empowers us to shine despite it.

Application

As Christians, we are called to be light-bearers in times of turmoil and division. Reflect on how you responded to the events on January 6. Were your words and actions marked by fear, anger, or despair? Or did you shine the light of Christ through love, prayer, and a commitment to justice and reconciliation?

Take the opportunity to engage in intentional acts of healing and unity in your community. Whether it’s through listening to someone with a different perspective, volunteering for a cause that bridges divides, or simply praying for our nation’s leaders, each small light contributes to overcoming the darkness.

Conclusion

The Day of Epiphany reminds us that Christ’s light is greater than any shadow the world can cast. The events of January 6 may linger in our collective memory, but they cannot overshadow the eternal truth of Christ’s glory. Let us arise and shine, not ignoring the darkness but confronting it with the unwavering light of Christ.

Prayer

Lord of light and life, we come to You with hearts burdened by the shadows in our world. On this Day of Epiphany, we ask for Your Spirit to guide us in reflecting Your light. May we be vessels of hope, healing, and peace in a world that desperately needs Your presence. Empower us to arise and shine, knowing that Your glory has risen upon us. We pray for unity in our nation and for the courage to act as Your faithful servants. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
