Praying the Scriptures

Thursday Morning Prayer

July 17, 2025

The spirit of the LORD GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners; to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn. (Isaiah 61:1–2)

Lord,

As the first rays of sunlight spill over the ridgeline of the Florida Mountains, I sit in the quiet stillness of this desert morning. The sky, once draped in violet shadows, now glows with hues of gold and soft amber. A breeze carries the earthy scent of creosote and sunbaked mesquite, and the warmth of the day begins to chase away the night’s cool hush. The high desert wakes slowly—reverent, expectant, alive with Your presence.

In this sacred light, I remember Your Word: “The spirit of the Lord God is upon me…” And Lord, I believe it. I receive it.

You have anointed me—not because I am strong, but because You are. You have sent me—not because I am worthy, but because You are merciful. You have whispered into my soul a calling too holy to ignore: to carry good news into hard places, to speak healing where there is heartache, to stand alongside the bound and proclaim freedom.

I feel the weight and the wonder of that call this morning, here beneath this vast New Mexico sky. I know I cannot fulfill it alone.

So I ask, Lord—let this rising sun remind me daily that Your mercies are new. Let it warm not just the land, but my heart. Strengthen me to live as one who brings comfort to those who mourn, who lifts the eyes of the weary to see hope again, who believes that even the smallest act of compassion can reflect the greatness of Your Spirit within me.

Anoint me anew today with Your grace. Let my words bring healing. Let my hands serve gently. Let my presence point to You.

This is the year of Your favor, O God. Let me live like I believe it.

Amen.

May the Spirit of the Lord go with you today, guiding your steps with purpose, filling your heart with compassion, and anointing your every word with healing grace.
