Psalm 119:64
The earth, O LORD, is full of your steadfast love; teach me your statutes.

Commentary
The Hebrew word translated as “steadfast love” is ḥesed, a term rich with covenantal significance. It denotes not merely affection but loyal, committed love, often describing God’s unwavering faithfulness to His people. By declaring that “the earth is full” of this ḥesed, the psalmist affirms that creation itself testifies to God’s goodness and covenant loyalty.
The second half of the verse, “teach me your statutes,” uses the Hebrew word ḥuqqîm, which refers to God’s prescribed ordinances, laws, or decrees. This request reflects a desire not only to acknowledge God’s love as manifested in the world but also to align one’s life with it through obedience. The pairing of divine love with divine instruction suggests that knowledge of God’s character naturally leads to a longing for God’s guidance. Structurally, the verse forms a parallelism: God’s love is revealed outwardly in creation, and the psalmist seeks inward transformation through learning God’s statutes.
