Praying the Scriptures

Sunday Evening Prayer

February 8, 2026

“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God”Romans 8:14-16

Heavenly Father,

As the last light of this Sunday fades from the high desert, the air turns sharp and cold here in the valley. To the east, the jagged silhouette of the Florida Mountains stands distinct against the darkening violet sky, a vast and silent reminder of your enduring presence in this barren season. The stillness of February rests heavily on the mesquite and the hard earth, mirroring the quiet ache within my own soul. I come to you feeling small amidst this expanse, acknowledging that my own strength is often as brittle as the winter brush, and I long for a faith that runs deeper than the dry surface of my current understanding.

Yet, in this deepening twilight, I remember that I do not walk this path alone or in fear, but as one who has been claimed and held. I ask that your Spirit would speak clearly to my spirit tonight, quieting the anxious noise of the world and replacing it with the profound assurance that I am truly your child. When I am uncertain of the way forward, let your voice be the guide that cuts through the confusion, reminding me that I am not bound by a spirit of timidity, but liberated by your love. Where I see only my own limitations and the long, dark hours, help me to perceive your power at work, perfect and sufficient, weaving strength into the very fabric of my weakness.

As I prepare to rest, I place my trust in your ability to bring life out of the dormant and the small. Just as the desert seeds wait in the dark earth for the eventual rains, I believe that you are nurturing growth within me that I cannot yet see. Take the small mustard seed of my faith and expand it, turning my hesitation into a quiet, unshakeable confidence for the days ahead. I surrender my need for control and lean entirely into the promise that I belong to you, ready to face the morning with the hope of a calm and renewed spirit.

Amen.

May the Spirit of adoption embrace us all this night, affirming that we are beloved children of God and guiding us together into a peaceful rest.
