March Forth: Stepping Out Before the Waters Part

“Then the LORD said to Moses, ‘Why do you cry out to me? Tell the Israelites to go forward.’”Exodus 14:15

Introduction

Look closely at today’s date on the calendar. March 4 is beautifully unique because it is the only day of the year that doubles as an imperative command: “March forth!” This gentle linguistic pun serves as a brilliant doorway into a deeper spiritual reality. It is a call to transition, a summons to courage, and an invitation to new beginnings. So often in our spiritual lives, we stand frozen, waiting for the perfect moment or crystal-clear instructions before we make a move. Yet, as we see in the sweeping story of Exodus 14, the call to “march forth” often comes exactly when the path is entirely obscured. It is a reminder that moving forward in faith requires us to step out even when the waters have not yet parted.

Reflection

Imagine the sheer panic of the Israelites in this ancient moment. They are entirely boxed in. Before them roars the impassable expanse of the Red Sea; behind them thunders the dust and fury of the pursuing Egyptian army. They are trapped at the shoreline of their own deliverance, caught between what used to be and what cannot yet be seen. In their terror, they cry out, expecting God to provide a visible bridge or a sudden escape route before they take a single step.

Instead, God issues a startling instruction to Moses: Tell the people to go forward. God does not part the waters while the Israelites are sitting safely in the sand. The command to move precedes the miracle. The path is only revealed as they physically step toward the impossible. Faith, in this story, must move first.

Think about what it is like to drive a car through a heavy, morning fog. When you are behind the wheel, wrapped in thick gray mist, you cannot see your final destination. You cannot even see the road a mile ahead. All you have is the glow of your headlights piercing just a few feet into the darkness. But you do not put the car in park and sit on the highway waiting for the sun to burn off the fog. You keep driving. You trust that as you move forward into the mist, the next few feet of the road will be revealed to you.

Our spiritual journeys are often like driving in that fog. We want the full map, the guarantee of safety, and the assurance of success before we commit. But God’s invitation is usually much more intimate: He simply provides enough light for the very next step. Whether you are stepping out to apply for a job without any guarantees, making a difficult phone call to mend a broken relationship, or walking into a new and unfamiliar chapter of life, God often provides the solid ground only as we obey, not before. When we bring our willingness to the shoreline, God meets us in the waters.

Application

To move forward today, you do not need to figure out the rest of your life; you only need to figure out the rest of today. Consider these questions as you seek your footing:

  • Identify your next step: What is one small, faithful step you can take today toward the life or calling God has placed on your heart?

  • Examine your hesitation: Where in your life are you currently waiting for absolute certainty before you are willing to offer your obedience?

  • Seek companionship: Who is a trusted friend or mentor you can ask to walk alongside you in this current season of transition or uncertainty?

Conclusion

As you face the open road or the vast sea before you today, take heart in knowing that God’s presence goes with you into the unknown. Forward movement in faith does not always look like a heroic leap; more often, it looks like a small, quiet, and faithful footstep taken in the dark. Even when you feel entirely trapped by circumstances, remember that the Creator of the universe specializes in making a way where there seems to be none. The dawn will come, the fog will lift, and the waters will part—but first, you must move.

Prayer

Gracious and loving God, when we stand at the shorelines of our own fears and see no way forward, remind us that You are already in the waters. Grant us the courage to step into the unknown and the trust to believe that You will provide solid ground beneath our feet. Give us wisdom to see the very next step You are illuminating, and calm our anxious hearts with the peace of Your steady presence. Lead us through the fog, guide our transitions, and hold us close as we journey toward the new beginnings You have prepared for us. Amen.

May you march forth today—one faithful step at a time.
