Verse of the Day for May 28, 2026

Romans 12:15

Sharing Joy and Bearing Sorrow

“Rejoice with those who rejoice. Weep with those who weep.”

The Word Before Us

Some verses are brief enough to memorize quickly, yet deep enough to spend a lifetime practicing. Romans 12:15 is one of those verses. In two simple sentences, Paul calls the people of God into a love that is not distant, guarded, or self-protective. He teaches us to enter the joys and sorrows of others with a heart shaped by Christ. This kind of love does not stand across the room offering polite words. It draws near. It learns to celebrate without envy and grieve without fear.

There is a holy tenderness in this command. The Christian life is not meant to be lived with a closed heart. We are members of one body, and what happens to one part matters to the whole. When another person rejoices, love refuses to diminish their gladness. When another person weeps, love refuses to leave them alone in their sorrow. Paul is showing us the quiet beauty of shared life in Christ, where joy is multiplied and grief is gently carried together.

Understanding the Context

The apostle Paul wrote the letter to the Romans to believers in Rome, a church made up of both Jewish and Gentile Christians. After explaining the mercy of God in Christ and the saving work of grace, Paul turns in chapter 12 to the shape of a life offered back to God. He begins by urging believers to present their bodies as a living sacrifice and to be transformed by the renewing of their minds. From there, he describes the character of a Christian community formed by mercy.

Romans 12:15 stands among a series of practical instructions about sincere love, humility, patience, generosity, peace, and care for others. Paul is not giving sentimental advice. He is describing what redeemed life looks like when the gospel moves from belief into behavior. The verse matters because it reminds us that Christian love is not only shown in great acts of sacrifice, but also in the daily willingness to be emotionally present with one another. The church becomes a living witness to Christ when its people know how to rejoice together and how to weep together.

Living the Verse Today

To rejoice with those who rejoice requires humility. Sometimes another person’s blessing can expose our own longing, disappointment, or

insecurity. It is possible to smile outwardly while inwardly comparing, resenting, or wondering why God has not given us the same gift. Paul calls us to a better way. In Christ, we can celebrate another person’s joy without making it a measure of our own worth. Their gladness does not diminish God’s love for us. Their blessing is an invitation to give thanks.

To weep with those who weep requires compassion. We do not have to explain every sorrow, fix every wound, or find the perfect words. Often, the most faithful ministry is presence. Sitting beside the grieving, listening without rushing, praying without pretending, and allowing tears to be tears can become a quiet expression of Christ’s love. Jesus himself drew near to the brokenhearted. He was not embarrassed by human grief, and he did not treat sorrow as a lack of faith.

This verse also teaches us to slow down enough to notice people. In a hurried world, joy can go uncelebrated, and sorrow can go unseen. A

faithful heart pays attention. It asks, “Who around me needs someone to rejoice with them? Who needs someone to sit with them in their weeping?” Such love may appear small, but in the hands of God, it becomes a ministry of encouragement, belonging, and grace.

Where is God inviting me to more fully share in another person’s joy or sorrow with the tender, faithful love of Christ?
