Verse of the Day for May 20, 2026
Romans 15:5-6
One Voice in Christ
“Now the God of perseverance and of encouragement grant you to be of the same mind with one another according to Christ Jesus, that with one accord you may with one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
The Word Before Us
There are seasons when Christian unity sounds simple until we have to practice it with real people. We bring different stories, different wounds, different habits, and different ways of seeing the world into the fellowship of Christ. Yet Paul does not call believers to a shallow sameness or a polite silence that hides the truth. He prays for something deeper: a shared life shaped by the perseverance and encouragement of God, so that the church may glorify Him with one accord and one mouth.
Romans 15:5-6 reminds us that harmony among believers is not produced by personality, preference, or pressure. It is a gift God forms in His people as they learn to live according to Christ Jesus. The same Lord who strengthens weary hearts also teaches His people how to bear with one another, listen with humility, and worship together with a united voice.
Understanding the Context
The apostle Paul wrote the letter to the Romans to the believers in Rome, a church made up of both Jewish and Gentile Christians. Throughout the letter, Paul explains the grace of God revealed in Jesus Christ and shows how that grace reshapes the lives of those who belong to Him. By the time we reach Romans 15, Paul is applying the gospel to the life of the Christian community.
In the surrounding passage, Paul urges stronger believers not to please themselves, but to bear with the weaknesses of others. He points to Christ, who did not live for self-protection or selfish comfort, but gave Himself in obedience to the Father and love for others. Paul then turns this exhortation into a prayer. He asks the God of perseverance and encouragement to grant believers the same mind toward one another according to Christ Jesus.
This context matters because Paul is not asking the church to create unity by ignoring convictions or flattening differences. He is calling them to a Christ-shaped life together. Their shared worship is meant to rise from shared grace. When believers receive one another in the spirit of Christ, their unity becomes a witness to the God who has welcomed them.
Living the Verse Today
This verse speaks gently but directly to our daily life with other believers. It reminds us that Christian fellowship is not only about receiving encouragement for ourselves; it is also about becoming people through whom God brings encouragement, patience, and peace to others. In families, churches, friendships, and ministries, unity often begins with a surrendered heart.
To be of the same mind, according to Christ Jesus, does not mean we will always agree about every detail. It means we are learning to bring our attitudes, words, and desires under the lordship of Christ. We ask whether our speech builds up or tears down. We ask whether our actions seek the good of another person or merely defend our own way. We ask whether our worship on Sunday is being contradicted by our impatience, pride, or resentment during the week.
Paul’s prayer also teaches us that unity is sustained by God. We cannot manufacture holy harmony by willpower alone. We need the God of perseverance when love requires endurance. We need the God of encouragement when disappointment makes us weary. We need the grace of Christ when old hurts make it difficult to speak kindly, forgive honestly, or keep serving faithfully.
When God forms this spirit within His people, worship becomes more than words. With one accord and one mouth, the church glorifies the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. A united voice does not erase individual stories; it gathers redeemed lives into a shared song of grace.
