The Daily Lectionary
THURSDAY, April 23, 2020
(Revised Common Lectionary Year A)

I will call upon God
1  I love the Lord, for he heard my voice;
     he heard my cry for mercy.
2  Because he turned his ear to me,
     I will call on him as long as I live.

3  The cords of death entangled me,
     the anguish of the grave came over me;
     I was overcome by distress and sorrow.
4  Then I called on the name of the Lord:
     “Lord, save me!”

12 What shall I return to the Lord
     for all his goodness to me?

13 I will lift up the cup of salvation
     and call on the name of the Lord.
14 I will fulfill my vows to the Lord
     in the presence of all his people.

15 Precious in the sight of the Lord
     is the death of his faithful servants.
16 Truly I am your servant, Lord;
     I serve you just as my mother did;
     you have freed me from my chains.

17 I will sacrifice a thank offering to you
     and call on the name of the Lord.
18 I will fulfill my vows to the Lord
     in the presence of all his people,
19 in the courts of the house of the Lord—
     in your midst, Jerusalem.

   Praise the Lord.

Praise for deliverance
1  Lord, you are my God;
     I will exalt you and praise your name,
   for in perfect faithfulness
     you have done wonderful things,
     things planned long ago.
2  You have made the city a heap of rubble,
     the fortified town a ruin,
   the foreigners’ stronghold a city no more;
     it will never be rebuilt.
3  Therefore strong peoples will honor you;
     cities of ruthless nations will revere you.
4  You have been a refuge for the poor,
     a refuge for the needy in their distress,
   a shelter from the storm
     and a shade from the heat.
   For the breath of the ruthless
     is like a storm driving against a wall
5    and like the heat of the desert.
   You silence the uproar of foreigners;
     as heat is reduced by the shadow of a cloud,
     so the song of the ruthless is stilled.

The promised salvation comes
1:8b and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 9 for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care, 11 trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of the Messiah and the glories that would follow. 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.

The Daily Lectionary is a three-year cyclical lectionary. We are currently in Year A. Beginning with the first Sunday of Advent in 2020, we will be in Year B. The year which ended at Advent 2019 was Year C. These readings complement the Sunday and festival readings: Thursday through Saturday readings help prepare the reader for the Sunday ahead; Monday through Wednesday readings help the reader reflect and digest what they heard in worship.
