“Faithful Stewards: Multiplying God's Blessings” The Gospel Message for Sunday, November 19, 2023

Today's Gospel message comes from Matthew 25:14-30, Slaves entrusted with talents. In today's message, we encounter the story of the master who entrusts his servants with talents, a narrative that unveils essential truths about faith, diligence, and the profound grace of God.

As we delve into this powerful passage, let us open our hearts to the teachings it holds for us today. Let us contemplate the implications of being entrusted with divine gifts and the accountability that comes with them. May this gospel message inspire us to examine our lives, reassess our priorities, and respond to our calling as faithful stewards with joy, diligence, and a heart that seeks to hear those glorious words from our Lord one day: "Well done, good and faithful servant!"

Let us revisit the text:
“Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them. To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. The man who had received five bags of gold went at once and put his money to work and gained five bags more. So also, the one with two bags of gold gained two more. But the man who had received one bag went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.

“After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. The man who had received five bags of gold brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five bags of gold. See, I have gained five more.’

“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’

“The man with two bags of gold also came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with two bags of gold; see, I have gained two more.’

“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’

“Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’

“His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.

“‘So take the bag of gold from him and give it to the one who has ten bags. For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ (Matthew 25:14-30, NIV)
Heavenly Father, as we gather in Your presence today, we humbly come before You with hearts filled with gratitude and reverence. We acknowledge Your sovereignty, Your boundless love, and Your gracious bestowal of talents and blessings upon each of us. Lord, we thank You for the sacred text we are about to explore, the parable of the talents from Matthew 25, which holds profound wisdom for our lives as Your children.

We pray that Your Holy Spirit may guide us through the words of this passage, opening our hearts and minds to the lessons You have for us today. Help us to see ourselves in the servants entrusted with talents, recognizing that You have uniquely gifted each one of us for a purpose in Your kingdom.

Lord, grant us the wisdom to understand that these talents are not merely material possessions or skills but represent the spiritual gifts, abilities, and resources You have given us to advance Your kingdom and glorify Your name. May we understand the weight of responsibility that comes with the blessings You have entrusted us with.

As we delve into the teachings of this parable, may Your Spirit convict us where needed, inspire us to be faithful stewards of Your grace, and empower us to use our talents for the expansion of Your kingdom and the betterment of our fellow human beings.

Lord, we also acknowledge our dependence on Your grace and mercy, for it is not by our own strength that we can fulfill our roles as faithful stewards. We seek Your guidance, empowerment, and discernment to use our talents wisely, with diligence and love, as we anticipate the day when we will stand before You to give an account of our stewardship.

May the words of this gospel message touch our hearts, transform our lives, and draw us closer to You, our loving and gracious Lord. We pray all these things in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ, who taught us to be faithful servants and who intercedes for us before Your throne. Amen.

“Faithful Stewards:
Multiplying God's Blessings”
by Kenny Sallee, ThM

Introduction:

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today we gather to explore a profound parable from the Gospel of Matthew, the parable of the talents. In this story, Jesus shares powerful insights about our roles as stewards of God's blessings. Let us open our hearts to this timeless message, found in Matthew 25:14-30, and discover how it applies to our lives as faithful followers of Christ.

I. The Entrusted Talents (Matthew 25:14-15)

In the parable, a master entrusts his servants with varying amounts of talents before embarking on a journey. To one, he gives five talents, to another two, and to the last, one talent, each according to his ability. The master's act of entrusting talents to his servants mirrors God's grace in our lives. We've all been given different abilities, resources, and opportunities, according to God's divine wisdom.

II. The Faithful and Diligent Servants (Matthew 25:16-23)

Two of the servants immediately set out to invest their talents. The one given five talents doubles them to ten, and the one with two talents doubles them to four. Their actions reflect a deep understanding of their role as stewards. They recognize that the talents were not their own but gifts from their master, and they respond with faithfulness and diligence.

Likewise, as believers, we are called to be faithful and diligent stewards of the blessings God has given us. Whether it's our time, talents, finances, or spiritual gifts, we are to use them wisely and productively, seeking to multiply them for the glory of God and the benefit of His kingdom.

III. The Fearful and Unproductive Servant (Matthew 25:24-30)

Regrettably, one servant, given one talent, chose a different path. He buried his talent in the ground, motivated by fear and a misguided perception of his master's character. His inaction led to no growth or increase, resulting in disappointment for both himself and his master.

This servant's story serves as a warning for us. Fear and complacency can paralyze our stewardship, preventing us from fulfilling our God-given potential. When we let fear dominate us, we risk squandering the blessings God has bestowed upon us. Instead of hiding our talents, we should be using them to their fullest extent, trusting in God's faithfulness.

IV. The Master's Response (Matthew 25:24-30)

Upon his return, the master commends the two faithful servants, saying, "Well done, good and faithful servant!" They are rewarded with greater responsibilities and invited to share in their master's joy.

Conversely, the fearful servant is rebuked for his negligence. His one talent is taken from him and given to the servant who had ten. This may seem unfair, but it illustrates a vital spiritual truth: God expects us to make the most of the blessings He has given us. When we are faithful with little, He entrusts us with more.

Conclusion:

Dear friends, as we reflect on the parable of the talents, let us consider the talents and blessings God has entrusted to us. Are we being faithful and diligent stewards, actively using what He has given us for His glory and the advancement of His kingdom? Or are we burying our talents out of fear or complacency?

Let us remember that God is a generous master who delights in rewarding faithfulness. He longs to say to each of us, "Well done, good and faithful servant!" May we embrace our role as faithful stewards, using our talents to their fullest potential, and may our lives be a testimony to the grace and goodness of our loving Master, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father, as we conclude this time of reflection and exploration of Your Word, we come before You with hearts filled with gratitude and humility. We thank You for the profound message embedded in the parable of the talents, a message that calls us to be faithful stewards of the blessings You have entrusted to us.

Lord, we recognize that we are like the servants in the parable, each given talents according to our abilities. We acknowledge that all we have comes from Your gracious hand, and we are called to use these blessings wisely and productively. Help us, Lord, to be faithful and diligent in our stewardship.

We confess any fear, complacency, or hesitancy that has held us back from fully investing our talents for Your kingdom. May Your Spirit empower us to overcome these obstacles and step boldly into the opportunities You set before us.

We pray for the courage to take risks in using our talents, knowing that You are a loving and gracious Master who desires to see us multiply the gifts You've given us. We ask for Your guidance and wisdom as we seek to make a positive impact in our families, communities, and the world at large.

Lord, help us to remember that faithfulness in small things leads to greater responsibilities and a deeper partnership with You. May we hear Your voice saying, "Well done, good and faithful servant," and may our lives bring glory to Your name.

We also pray for those who may be feeling discouraged or uncertain about their talents and abilities. May they find encouragement and inspiration in Your Word, knowing that You have a unique purpose for each of them.

As we leave this place, may the message of this parable linger in our hearts, guiding our actions and attitudes. Let us not bury our talents but multiply them in service to Your kingdom.

In the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who exemplified perfect stewardship and selfless service, we pray. Amen.
