Psalm 1:1-2
1 Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, 2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.
In these opening verses of Psalm 1, we find a vivid contrast between two distinct ways of life. The psalmist begins by declaring the blessedness of those who choose not to walk in the counsel of the wicked. This choice involves not only actions but also one's posture and association. The individual who seeks God's favor avoids not only the behavior of the wicked but also refuses to stand in the path of sinners and sit among mockers. This progression highlights a gradual descent into sin and ungodliness—from walking alongside the wicked to standing in their way and eventually participating in their mocking and scoffing.

On the positive side, the psalmist highlights the key to blessedness—delighting in the law of the Lord and meditating on it day and night. This implies a deep love and reverence for God's teachings. It's not merely about following rules but finding genuine joy in understanding and applying God's Word. The phrase day and night suggests a continual and intentional focus on God's law, emphasizing the importance of an unwavering commitment to living a righteous life.

Psalm 1:1-2 serves as an invitation to reflect on the choices we make in life. It encourages us to be mindful of the company we keep and the influence of our environment on our character. It also underscores the significance of God's Word in shaping our thoughts, actions, and ultimately, our blessings. These verses set the stage for the profound spiritual journey that unfolds in the Book of Psalms, reminding us of the timeless wisdom found within its pages.
