Psalm 97:10
Let those who love the Lord hate evil, for he guards the lives of his faithful ones and delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
Psalm 97 is a celebration of the Lord's reign, emphasizing His power and justice. This psalm belongs to a collection of psalms known as the "enthronement psalms," which describe the Lord's sovereignty over the world. The psalmist expresses joy in God's dominion and calls upon the earth to rejoice in His righteous rule.

The Call to Love and Hate: This verse presents a clear dichotomy: love for the Lord and hatred for evil. It implies that a true affection for God naturally results in an aversion to evil. This connection between love for the divine and moral action is a common theme in biblical literature.

Protection of the Faithful: The verse reassures believers that God watches over those who are faithful to Him. This protection is not just spiritual but also extends to their physical lives, suggesting that God's care is comprehensive and extends to all aspects of existence.

Deliverance from Wickedness: The assurance of deliverance from the "hand of the wicked" speaks to a common biblical theme of God as a deliverer. This deliverance can be understood both in a temporal sense, as in protection from immediate harm, and in an eschatological sense, referring to the ultimate salvation of the faithful from the power of evil.

The Ethical Implication: Psalm 97:10 encourages believers to actively engage in a moral life. It is not enough to passively love God; this love must manifest in a tangible rejection of evil. This verse thus serves as both a comfort and a call to action, reminding the faithful of God’s protection while urging them to live righteously.

In summary, Psalm 97:10 captures the essence of the righteous life as envisioned in the Hebrew Scriptures: a life characterized by love for God, a rejection of evil, and a trust in God’s protective and saving power.
