Living in the Hyphen

Lead lives worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, as you bear fruit in every good work and as you grow in the knowledge of God. (Colossians 1:10)

Introduction

The brevity of a lifetime can often be symbolized by a simple hyphen on a tombstone. This small dash, placed between the years of birth and death, encapsulates the entirety of a person’s life. Colossians 1:10 calls us to "lead lives worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, as you bear fruit in every good work and as you grow in the knowledge of God." How can we ensure that our "hyphen years" are lived in a way that glorifies God and bears lasting fruit?

Reflection

Colossians 1:10 encourages us to reflect on the quality and purpose of our lives. The verse urges us to live in a manner that pleases the Lord, bearing fruit in every good work and growing in the knowledge of God. This means that our daily actions, decisions, and interactions should reflect our commitment to Christ. Our lives, represented by the hyphen, are an opportunity to grow spiritually, serve others, and spread the love and truth of God.

Application

Living in the hyphen involves intentionality and focus. Here are a few ways to apply this in your daily life:

1. Examine Your Priorities: Assess whether your daily activities align with your commitment to Christ. Are you prioritizing time with God, serving others, and seeking spiritual growth?

2. Engage in Good Works: Look for opportunities to serve those around you. Acts of kindness, generosity, and compassion not only benefit others but also bear fruit that glorifies God.

3. Grow in Knowledge: Commit to regular Bible study, prayer, and fellowship with other believers. Growing in the knowledge of God helps us to understand His will and live accordingly.

4. Reflect on Your Legacy: Consider the impact you want to leave behind. Are your actions and choices leading to a legacy that honors God and serves as an inspiration to others?

Conclusion

The hyphen years between our birth and death are filled with potential. By living in a way that pleases the Lord, bearing fruit in every good work, and continually growing in the knowledge of God, we ensure that our lives have a lasting, positive impact. Let us strive to fill our hyphen with meaningful, God-honoring actions that reflect our faith and commitment to His will.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of life and the opportunity to serve You. Help us to live our hyphen years in a manner that is worthy of You, fully pleasing in every way. Guide us to bear fruit in every good work and to grow continuously in our knowledge of You. May our lives reflect Your love and truth, leaving a legacy that honors You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
