A Safe Place in God's Presence

You who live in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.” (Psalm 91:1-2)

Introduction

In times of sorrow and loneliness, we often seek solace and refuge in familiar places or with trusted friends. Psalm 91:1-2 reminds us that our ultimate refuge and fortress is found in God. "You who live in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to the LORD, ‘My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.’" This devotion explores the journey of Fred, who, after the loss of his wife, found comfort in the companionship of his friends and later in his relationship with God.

Reflection

Fred's story resonates with many who have faced profound loss. After his wife's passing, Fred found strength in his Monday breakfasts with his buddies. Their camaraderie lifted his spirits and gave him something to look forward to each week. The corner table at the diner became a safe place from his grief, a fortress of friendship and shared memories.

However, as time passed, Fred's support system began to dwindle. Friends became ill or passed away, leaving him once again to face the void. It was in this deeper loneliness that Fred turned to the God he had known in his youth. He discovered that while human companionship is precious, the divine presence of God offers an unfailing refuge.

Psalm 91 speaks to this truth. Living in the shelter of the Most High means finding safety and comfort in God's presence, no matter our circumstances. God’s shadow is always near, providing a constant refuge and fortress. For Fred, remembering that Jesus is with him at every solitary breakfast became his new source of strength.

Application

We all experience seasons of loss and loneliness. During these times, it is natural to seek comfort from friends and familiar routines. However, we must also recognize the enduring refuge offered by God. When earthly sources of comfort fade, God remains steadfast.

In practical terms, we can cultivate this divine refuge by setting aside time each day for prayer, reading scripture, and meditating on God's promises. We can remind ourselves that we are never truly alone, even in our most solitary moments. Like Fred, we can hold onto the truth that Jesus is always with us, ready to offer comfort and strength.

Conclusion

Fred's journey from finding solace in friends to rediscovering the enduring refuge in God teaches us a valuable lesson. Earthly friendships and routines are important, but they are temporary. God's presence, however, is eternal. As we navigate our own struggles, let us seek the shelter of the Most High and trust in Him as our refuge and fortress.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for being our refuge and fortress in times of trouble. When we feel lonely, and our earthly sources of comfort fade, remind us of Your constant presence. Help us to find solace in Your shadow and strength in Your love. We lift up those who, like Fred, are experiencing loss and loneliness. May they feel Your comforting presence and trust in You as their eternal refuge. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
