In Your Hand
The LORD said to [Moses], “What is that in your hand?” He said, “A staff.” (Exodus 4:2)
Introduction
In Exodus 4:2, we encounter Moses at a pivotal moment. God asked him, "What is that in your hand?" and Moses replied, "A staff." This simple question highlights a profound truth about how God uses ordinary things for His extraordinary purposes. Let's delve into this verse and discover how it speaks to our lives today.
Reflection
Imagine young Moses, perhaps feeling inadequate and uncertain of his future. Yet, God focused on what was already in Moses' grasp—a mere staff, a tool of his trade as a shepherd. This staff would soon become a symbol of God's power, used to perform miracles and lead Israel out of Egypt. It reminds us that God often uses what is familiar and seemingly mundane in our hands to fulfill His divine plans.
Consider my journey with reading and writing. As a young person, words were a baffling maze due to an undiagnosed reading disorder. Reading and writing were daunting tasks, filled with frustration and confusion. Yet, over the years, with perseverance and faith, what once seemed an impossible challenge transformed into a tool for ministry. Now, at 71, I wield these skills to craft words that glorify God, much like Moses' staff, turning my once-perceived weakness into a conduit for God's work.
Application
Think about what is in your hand today. It might be a skill, a talent, or even a struggle that has shaped who you are. How can you offer it to God for His use? The Lord doesn't call the equipped; He equips the called. He can take the ordinary aspects of our lives and turn them into extraordinary testimonies of His faithfulness.
Conclusion
Moses' story teaches us that nothing is too ordinary or too flawed for God's purposes. As we offer up our lives to Him, He can transform our simplest abilities into powerful tools for His kingdom. Let us then approach God with open hands, ready to be used by Him in ways we never imagined.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us through Moses' story that You see potential where we see limitation. Help us to trust that what we have in our hands can be used mightily by You. Teach us to surrender our abilities, our struggles, and our all to You, knowing that You work all things together for good. May we serve You faithfully, using the very things we once thought were inadequate. In Jesus' name, Amen.
