2 Corinthians 7:1
Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and of spirit, making holiness perfect in the fear of God.
Introduction
In 2 Corinthians 7:1, Paul continues his discourse to the Corinthian church, emphasizing the importance of living a holy life free from the defilements of body and spirit. This verse concludes his previous arguments and transitions into a discussion about his relationship with the church.
Commentary
Paul references "these promises" as those he has previously discussed—namely, the promises of God to dwell among His people and to be their God (2 Corinthians 6:16). The call to cleanse from every defilement of body and spirit underscores the Christian’s dual responsibility to live righteously both in physical actions and spiritual attitudes. This imperative for purification and sanctification is driven by a reverence for God, highlighting the transformative power of divine promises in a believer’s life.
Understanding the Context
The verse sits within the broader context of Paul's second letter to the Corinthians, where he deals with issues like reconciliation, repentance, and the ministry of reconciliation that God has entrusted to the apostles. Paul's appeal for purity follows his admonition against forming binding relationships with unbelievers, which could lead to spiritual compromise. His encouragement to pursue holiness is not merely moralistic but rooted in the transformative relationship with God through Christ.
Application for Today
In today's context, this verse reminds us of the ongoing need for personal sanctification. Believers are called to continually evaluate and cleanse themselves of practices or influences that may pollute their spiritual well-being or hinder their relationship with God. This pursuit of holiness is practical, involving both avoiding sin and actively engaging in behaviors that foster spiritual growth and integrity.
Reflection
Consider the areas of your life that may be contributing to spiritual complacency or impurity. What are the "defilements of body and spirit" that you need to cleanse yourself from? Reflect on how the fear of God—not as dread, but as profound reverence and awe—can motivate you to make holiness perfect in your life. How can embracing God's promises transform your approach to personal sanctification?
