2 Corinthians 10:17-18

“Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” For it is not those who commend themselves that are approved, but those whom the Lord commends.

Introduction

In 2 Corinthians 10:17-18, the Apostle Paul addresses the issue of boasting among the believers in Corinth. This passage concludes a section where Paul defends his ministry and authority against those who challenge him, using his own example to teach a broader spiritual principle. These verses underscore the theme of humility and the appropriate source of Christian boasting.

Commentary

Paul quotes Jeremiah 9:24 to remind the Corinthians that any boasting should be directed toward God, not towards personal achievements. This teaching is aimed at correcting those who pride themselves on outward appearances and human credentials. Paul emphasizes that true approval does not come from self-praise or public acclaim but from God Himself.

Understanding the Context

Corinth was a city known for its wealth, intellectualism, and competitive spirit. These cultural values influenced the community of believers in Corinth, which often led to divisions and boasting about spiritual gifts, leaders, and personal status. Paul's letter addresses these issues, urging the Corinthians to reject worldly values and find their worth and identity solely in Christ.

Application for Today

In today’s society, much like in ancient Corinth, there is a strong emphasis on achievement, appearance, and human approval. This passage challenges modern Christians to examine their motivations and the source of their pride. It encourages a shift from seeking validation from others to seeking commendation from God, who values humility, faithfulness, and the heart's condition above all.

Reflection

Consider the areas in your life where you might be seeking approval from others rather than from God. How can redirecting your boast to the Lord change your perspective on success and validation? Spend some time in prayer, asking God to help you find your value in Him and to enable you to boast only about what He has done in your life.
