John 6:29

Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”

Introduction

John 6:29 falls within a larger narrative in which Jesus interacts with a crowd that had followed him after the miracle of the feeding of the 5,000. This specific verse addresses the crowd's question about what they should do to perform God's works. Jesus' response shifts their focus from physical actions to a spiritual understanding of belief in Him whom God has sent.

Commentary

In this verse, Jesus emphasizes faith over works as God's primary requirement. The crowd, having witnessed a significant miracle, is still caught up in the idea of physical 'doing' or actions as a means to please God or earn salvation. However, Jesus clarifies that the true 'work' is a deep, abiding belief in Him, the Son sent by the Father. This is foundational for understanding Christian doctrine, where faith is central.

Understanding Context

The discourse in John 6 is deeply theological, reflecting on Jesus' identity as the Bread of Life, coming after the literal feeding of the crowd. This dialogue occurs when Jesus has crossed to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, and the crowd pursues Him, seeking more signs and possibly more physical food. Their focus on physical sustenance is met with Jesus’ call for spiritual insight and commitment, highlighting a common theme in John: the misunderstanding between the physical and the spiritual.

Application for Today

This verse speaks directly to contemporary Christians by underscoring that the essence of Christian living is not merely about external deeds but internal belief and trust in Jesus Christ. In a world where actions and results often measure success, this scripture invites believers to re-center their faith in Christ as the primary act of obedience to God. It challenges believers to evaluate their own faith and how it manifests in daily life.

Reflection

1. How does my understanding of "work" in my spiritual life align with what Jesus describes?

2. In what ways can I cultivate a deeper belief in Jesus in my daily activities?

3. What practical steps can I take to shift my focus from merely doing religious activities to truly believing and living out that belief in every aspect of my life?

This passage invites us to consider the foundational role of faith in our relationship with God and encourages us to trust deeply in Christ’s role as the sent Savior.
