The Excelsior Spirit

I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 3:14)

Introduction

In Philippians 3:14, the Apostle Paul shares a powerful expression of purpose and perseverance: "I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus." This verse captures the essence of unwavering determination and divine aspiration. The phrase can resonate deeply for fans of Marvel Comics, as it echoes the iconic motto of the late Stan Lee, "Excelsior!"—a Latin word meaning "ever upward."

Reflection

Stan Lee, the legendary publisher and face of Marvel Comics, was known for his enthusiasm, creativity, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. His motto, "Excelsior!" wasn't just a catchphrase; it encapsulated his philosophy of life—to always strive for greater heights and never settle for mediocrity. This spirit of ambition mirrors Paul's exhortation in Philippians 3:14.

Imagine the countless times Stan Lee faced challenges in his career yet chose to press onward. From battling financial difficulties to facing criticism over his revolutionary ideas, Lee's journey wasn’t smooth. Yet, like Paul, he kept his eyes on a greater goal. His perseverance led to the creation of some of the most beloved characters in comic book history, influencing millions around the world.

Consider a marathon runner in the final stretches of the race. Their body screams for relief; their breaths are short and heavy, yet their eyes are fixed on the finish line. This image parallels Paul’s and Lee's journeys. They both understood that the path to achieving great things involves enduring hardships, maintaining focus, and constantly moving forward.

Application

What goals have you set in your spiritual journey? Are they aligned with God's calling in your life? Like Paul and Stan Lee, we are all running a race marked not by speed but by endurance and faith. Identify areas in your life where you've settled for less because of fear or complacency. Challenge yourself to embrace the "Excelsior!" mindset, pressing onward in your faith, relationships, and personal growth.

Conclusion

Philippians 3:14 isn't just about running; it's about running with a purpose, driven by a divine calling. It encourages us to rise above the mundane and the immediate, reaching for the eternal prize. Stan Lee's life reminds us that even in secular pursuits, the spirit of "Excelsior!"—striving for something greater—can profoundly reflect our spiritual race.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the reminder that we are called to press toward the goal of Your heavenly call in Christ Jesus. Help us to embrace the spirit of "Excelsior!" in our daily lives, striving ever upward and onward, not for our glory, but for Yours. Give us the strength to overcome obstacles, the focus to remain true to our calling, and the perseverance to continue when the path becomes difficult. May our lives reflect Your love and Your greatness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
