Aiming to Please
So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him. (2 Corinthians 5:9)
Introduction
In his second letter to the Corinthians, Paul expresses a profound spiritual aspiration in 2 Corinthians 5:9: "So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him." This verse serves as a cornerstone for understanding our purpose while we navigate life in our "earthly tent," a metaphor Paul uses to describe our mortal, physical bodies in contrast to our eternal dwelling with God.
Reflection
Paul’s message is a reminder that our physical existence is temporary, but our actions within it carry eternal significance. We are travelers in a transient world, where each decision molds our spiritual journey towards God. The aim to please God transcends our location, situation, or condition — it is a consistent mission in the Christian life.
Consider the story of a seasoned sailor navigating through stormy seas under a starlit sky. His compass, though simple, is essential—it guides him, ensuring he remains on course toward his destination despite the tumultuous waves and deceptive calm alike. In our lives, the directive to please God is our spiritual compass. Amid life's storms and calm, our constant guide is the desire to align our actions, thoughts, and words with God’s will.
Application
Living with the aim to please God involves daily choices. It asks us to prioritize spiritual growth over earthly comfort, and divine principles over human approval. This could manifest in our lives as choosing integrity over convenience, or kindness over indifference. Every day presents new opportunities to reflect God’s character, serve others, and spread His word.
Conclusion
Our time in the earthly tent is limited and filled with challenges and decisions. However, understanding that our ultimate goal is to please God provides clarity and purpose. As we move closer to our eternal home, let our actions reflect our deep commitment to this divine purpose, turning everyday moments into steps toward spiritual fulfillment.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, as we journey in our earthly tents, guide our hearts and minds to always aim to please You. Grant us the strength to live by Your will, the courage to act with integrity, and the wisdom to choose Your way in every aspect of our lives. Help us to use our time wisely, knowing that each moment is a chance to reflect Your love and grace. May our lives be a continuous offering to You until we reach our eternal home. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
