Flourishing in the Latter Years

The righteous flourish like the palm tree, and grow like a cedar in Lebanon.… In old age they still produce fruit; they are always green and full of sap. (Psalm 92:12-14)

Introduction

Psalm 92:12-14 tells us: "The righteous flourish like the palm tree, and grow like a cedar in Lebanon. They are planted in the house of the Lord; they shall flourish in the courts of our God. They will still bear fruit in old age; they are ever full of sap and green."

These verses offer a vivid image of enduring vitality and purposeful living, regardless of age. They remind us that growth and productivity are not only the domain of the young but can also be abundantly present in the later stages of life.

Reflection

Julia "Hurricane" Hawkins, at the age of 105, remarkably competed in the 2021 Louisiana Senior Games. This incredible athlete not only participated but also broke records, embodying the essence of Psalm 92's portrayal of the righteous flourishing like a cedar in Lebanon. Like the sturdy cedar, which grows strong and majestic, Julia has shown that our capacity to thrive isn’t confined by the years we have lived.

In her journey, Julia exemplifies how one can still "bear fruit in old age" and remain "full of sap and green." Her story isn’t just about physical ability; it’s about a spirit undimmed by time. Just as the cedars of Lebanon reach upwards, untouched by the harshness of the world around them, Julia reaches new heights, inspiring those who might think their time for achievement has passed.

Application

No matter our age, we all have the potential to achieve remarkable things. Julia "Hurricane" Hawkins' story encourages us to break free from the limitations society often places on aging. Whether it’s exploring a new hobby, advancing our education, serving the community, competing in new challenges, or even seeking ordination in the Episcopal Church, every new pursuit becomes a chance to show that our spirit is always capable of growth and flourishing.

Take a moment to consider what "bearing fruit" might look like in your own life. Is there a dream you have deferred or a passion you have not pursued because you believed it was too late? Let Julia’s story encourage you to take that step, to plant yourself in the courts of our God, and watch how you, too, can flourish.

Conclusion

The cedars of Lebanon do not lose their strength; they stand tall and proud, weathering storms and thriving in the heights. In the same way, our lives, when rooted in faith and driven by purpose, can embody this strength and vigor at any age. Julia "Hurricane" Hawkins shows us that our later years can be full of life, purpose, and new records to set.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the inspiring life of Julia "Hurricane" Hawkins and the powerful words of Psalm 92. Help us to remember that our ability to bear fruit does not wane with age. Encourage us to remain vibrant and productive, to always be full of life and spirit, flourishing in Your presence. Guide us in pursuing our passions and dreams at every stage of our life, trusting that You are with us in all our endeavors. In Your holy name, we pray. Amen.
