Praying the Scriptures
Sunday Evening Prayer
October 20, 2024
Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm. The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; he frustrates the plans of the peoples. (Psalm 33:8–10)
O Lord, who commands the earth to fear and all its inhabitants to stand in awe,
As I stand under the vast New Mexican sky this crisp October evening, I feel Your majestic presence enveloping the land. The hues of the sunset remind me of Your artistry, the stars twinkling like the whispers of Your wisdom.
You, Lord, who gather the waters of the sea as in a bottle and put the deeps in storehouses, behold the boundless expanse of Your creation. As the cool breeze sweeps across the desert, carrying the scent of piñon wood and sage, I am reminded of Your sovereignty over nature, Your plan laid out with precision like the sands shaped by the wind.
Let the entirety of this world acknowledge Your powerful deeds and the unfathomable depth of Your statutes. Just as You thwart the plans of nations and frustrate the designs of the peoples, guide us, Your humble servants, to align our actions with Your divine will.
May our hearts be open to Your truth, and our spirits receptive to Your guidance. As the earth quiets and prepares for the night, let us too calm our minds and rest in Your peace, trusting that Your intentions for us are good and Your governance is just.
In Your holy and steadfast love, we find our reassurance and strength.
Amen.
I hope this prayer brings you comfort and peace through the night.
