Psalm 37:4

Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Introduction

Psalm 37:4 offers a powerful, uplifting message that resonates deeply with those who seek a closer relationship with God. This scripture encourages believers to find joy in their relationship with God, promising that such delight will lead to the fulfillment of their deepest desires.

Commentary

Psalm 37 is a wisdom psalm attributed to David, focusing on the theme of the righteous versus the wicked and the apparent prosperity of the wicked. Verse 4 specifically calls on the faithful to find their joy in God rather than in worldly or material gains. The promise that follows—"he will give you the desires of your heart"—suggests that when our hearts are aligned with God's will, our deepest desires will naturally align with what He knows is best for us.

Understanding Context

In its historical and literary context, Psalm 37 addresses the common human concern over the prosperity of the wicked compared to the suffering of the righteous. David, speaking from experience, counsels patience, trust in God, and commitment to a godly life. By advising us to "delight in the Lord," David points towards an intimate, joyful relationship with God as the foundation for living a fulfilled and righteous life.

Application for Today

In today's fast-paced, often materialistically driven society, Psalm 37:4 reminds us of the true source of fulfillment. Delighting in the Lord means prioritizing our spiritual life and finding joy in God's presence and His commandments. This perspective shifts our desires from self-centered ambitions to aspirations that serve God's purposes, promoting peace and justice. In practice, this might look like dedicating time to prayer, engaging in acts of kindness, or pursuing vocations that align with one's faith and values.

Reflection

How do we truly "delight" in the Lord in our daily lives? It requires us to immerse ourselves in prayer, scripture, and the sacraments but also to find God in the everyday moments of grace and kindness. As we align our hearts with God's will, we might find that the desires of our hearts are transformed, focusing more on love, peace, and community rather than transient pleasures or achievements. Reflecting on this verse, consider what desires have been placed in your heart and how they reflect your relationship with God. How can you further align these desires with God's will for a more fulfilled life?
