Treasures in Clay Jars

But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us. (2 Corinthians 4:7)

Introduction

On November 26, 1922, the world watched in awe as Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon became the first to enter King Tutankhamun’s tomb in over 3,000 years. Hidden in the Valley of the Kings, the tomb was an untouched repository of treasures that astounded archaeologists and historians alike. Yet, for all its splendor, those treasures were temporal—fading reminders of human achievement and mortality. Today’s verse reminds us of a far greater treasure: the transformative power of Christ residing within us.

Reflection

King Tutankhamun’s tomb was filled with gold, intricately carved artifacts, and symbols of an ancient civilization's desire to preserve a legacy. But those treasures were sealed away, untouched by human hands, until their rediscovery centuries later. In contrast, the treasure described by Paul in 2 Corinthians is not meant to be hidden. It is dynamic, living, and active—the very presence of God in us, fragile "clay jars."

Imagine discovering a dusty, cracked vase in a forgotten attic. At first glance, it seems insignificant. But when you look inside, you find a radiant gem, dazzling in its beauty. The value is not in the jar itself, but in the treasure it contains. So it is with us: God has chosen to place His extraordinary power and grace within ordinary people so that His glory shines all the brighter through our weaknesses.

Howard Carter spent years of diligent work, facing disappointment and hardship, before uncovering King Tut’s tomb. Likewise, our Christian walk often involves digging deep, enduring trials, and persisting in faith. The treasure we uncover is eternal, far surpassing anything the world can offer.

Application

  • Value the Treasure Within: Take time today to reflect on the immense gift of God’s Spirit within you. Do not underestimate your worth as a vessel of His glory.

  • Share the Treasure: Unlike the sealed tomb, God’s treasure in us is meant to be shared. How can you radiate Christ’s light to others this week?

  • Trust in Fragility: Embrace your imperfections, knowing that God’s power is made perfect in weakness. His light shines brighter through our cracks and flaws.

Conclusion

The discovery of King Tutankhamun’s tomb was an archaeological marvel, a testament to human history and ingenuity. But it pales in comparison to the treasure of Christ’s presence in our lives. We are called to be vessels of this priceless gift, not to hoard it but to let it flow out in love, service, and faith. Let us not seek to preserve ourselves in grandeur but to glorify the One who has placed His eternal treasure within us.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the extraordinary treasure You have placed in these fragile vessels of clay. Help us to embrace our weaknesses, trusting that Your power is made perfect through them. May we share Your light with a world searching for hope and eternal truth. Teach us to value what truly lasts and let our lives reflect Your glory. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
