Ephesians 1:18
So that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints.
Introduction
Ephesians 1:18 speaks to the deepening of spiritual understanding and awareness of God's call. Paul's letter to the Ephesians often emphasizes the richness of divine revelation and the believer's response to this knowledge. This verse specifically encourages Christians to realize the hope of God’s call and the glorious inheritance among the saints.
Commentary
Paul prays for the Ephesians to gain an enlightened understanding—what he describes as the "eyes of your heart" being illuminated. This metaphor suggests a deeper, internal vision that transcends regular sight, accessing divine truth. Paul's desire is for believers to truly comprehend the full scope of the hope their calling entails, which is tied not only to personal salvation but also to a communal inheritance with all saints.
Understanding Context
This passage is part of a larger section where Paul expresses his gratitude for the faith and love exhibited by the Ephesians, leading into a prayer for their spiritual wisdom and insight. This prayer underscores the themes of revelation and comprehension of divine mysteries—key elements in understanding God’s overall plan of unity and redemption through Christ.
Application for Today (All Saints Day)
On All Saints Day, this verse reminds us of the communal aspect of Christianity. It highlights our shared inheritance and the collective calling as saints, linking us to the faithful of the past and encouraging a unity that transcends temporal boundaries. It calls modern believers to recognize and cherish their part in this grand, divine legacy, which empowers us to live out our faith boldly and with enduring hope.
Reflection
Consider the last time you felt a profound sense of connection with the Christian community, both past and present. How does recognizing yourself as part of this "glorious inheritance" among the saints change your perspective on daily struggles and your approach to communal relationships within the church? On this, All Saints Day, reflect on how you can deepen your understanding of the hope to which God has called you and how you might live out this calling in a way that honors the legacy of the saints who have gone before us.
