John 17:17

Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.

Introduction

John 17:17 is nestled within Jesus’ profound prayer during the Last Supper, where He prays not only for His immediate disciples but also for future believers. This verse specifically focuses on the theme of sanctification through truth.

Commentary

In this passage, Jesus requests that His followers be sanctified—set apart for holy purposes—through the truth. The Greek word used here for "sanctify" (ἁγιάζω, hagiazō) refers to the process of becoming holy or consecrated. Jesus identifies "truth" as the means of this sanctification, asserting that God’s word itself is this truth. This emphasizes that divine truth isn't just a concept but an active and sanctifying force.

Understanding Context

John 17 is often referred to as the High Priestly Prayer. Jesus prays for Himself, His disciples, and all future believers. This prayer encapsulates His concerns and hopes for the church, emphasizing unity, protection from evil, and sanctification through truth. The statement "your word is truth" aligns with the broader biblical theme where the Word of God is seen as foundational to moral and spiritual truth (Psalm 119:160). It serves as a direct connection between God's revealed word and the believer's process of sanctification.

Application for Today

In a world inundated with conflicting information and diverse philosophies, the call to be sanctified in truth is as relevant as ever. Believers are encouraged to cling to the Bible as the ultimate source of truth, allowing it to guide their thoughts, actions, and spiritual growth. Sanctification is a lifelong journey where one continually aligns more closely with God’s will and character, demonstrated and taught in Scripture.

Reflection

  • How do we define "truth" in our daily lives, and how does this align with the biblical understanding as God’s word?

  • In what practical ways can we submit to God's Word to allow it to sanctify us?

  • Consider a time when a biblical truth particularly challenged or changed you. How did you respond, and what was the outcome?
