Praying the Scriptures

Monday Evening Prayer

January 6, 2025

In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.” (Matthew 2:1–2)

Gracious God,

As the sun sets over the desert and the stars begin to dance in the wide New Mexican sky, I come before You in awe and wonder. Just as the magi long ago looked to the heavens and followed the star, I, too, lift my eyes and seek Your light in the darkness.

Lord, I marvel at the story of those wise ones who traveled far, guided by faith, to find the newborn King. Their journey inspires me to reflect on my own path and the ways You call me to seek You each day. Help me, O God, to walk with purpose, keeping my heart fixed on Your promises, no matter how uncertain the road may seem.

Here in this land of adobe and sage, where the earth feels close to the heavens, I am reminded of Your constant presence. The beauty of this place, like the star of Bethlehem, points me back to You. May my life be a beacon that draws others to Your love, just as the magi were drawn to kneel before the Christ child.

Forgive me, Lord, for the times I have been distracted by lesser lights or wandered from Your path. Guide me back to You, for You alone are my true destination. Like the magi, I long to bring You gifts—not gold or incense, but the offerings of my heart: gratitude, love, and obedience.

As I prepare to rest this evening, may I be ever mindful of Your glory shining through the ordinary. Teach me to seek You in every moment, to listen for Your voice in the whisper of the wind, and to follow Your light wherever it leads.

Tonight, beneath the vast canopy of stars, I surrender to Your will, trusting in Your perfect guidance. Lead me, Lord, that I may proclaim with joy, "Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star at its rising, and have come to worship him."

In the name of Jesus Christ, the Light of the World, I pray.

Amen.

May this prayer bring solace and inspiration as you end your day in reflection and peace.
